It seems to be alot of the rain has quite large drops at times which would be mistaken for sleet  .
Woke up to a very heavy shower before also a few twigs around as the wind must have been up to gale force at times last night was quite strong from about 11pm.
I have up to 42mm in the gauge so far and looks like another heavy shower is on it's way.
Cheers
Jason.

Brilliant day here but cold. temps. :?
As compensation for the coolness this month's sun total is racing ahead of average. :)

Pretty chilly in Central Otago too. Fresh snow visible above about 1000m on mountains between Alexandra and Ranfurly, but publican at Wedderburn (about 500m asl) said it had been snowing there this morning. Some oubtreaks of rain yesterday and showers and fine intervals today. Had a brief hail squall early this afternoon between Oterehua and Ranfurly. At least it doesn't seem to be as bad as what Chch has been getting.

Yeah, get the army on your side, and you can take over the country really cheaply! Of course, only when there's no rugby on...

Still a few showers in the Maniatoto and Middlemarch areas yesterday, while today it was partly cloudy up to mid Canterbury and cloudy around Chch as I got back mid afternoon. Still chilly for the time of year. I could see snow on the Alps inland from Timaru (with a bit still on top of the Hunter Hills), but Canterbury foothills were capped by cloud. Probably still white on Mt Hutt. (easily could've been a bit on tops of Banks Peninsula yesterday, going by the descriptions of Chch weather)

The southerly attack is over  now we can enjoy summer again :D .
Up to 51mm of rain since midday Tuesday so id say thats more than average for December here and is likly to keep the fire risks down for awhile.
Still keeping eyes peeled for thunder days 8-[ ](*,) but patience is a virtue.
Cheers

In most parts of the Canty Plains December is the wettest month of the year on average. Not in Chch and on the Peninsula though.

There are some variants in the Plains scenario, away from Ch'ch/BP - esp. in places with a near-uniform distribution of averages - where July and even August pop up.

There was in the past a period of 30-year means, or something similar, when
if you took the entire Canterbury province, when there was at least one location for each month of the year which had that month as its wettest...from the restricted set of 30-year normals I have for 1971-2000 I suspect that this is now not the case (probably no winners for Feb).

Perhpas you can verify this latter part?! :-k
