BREAKING NEWS>>> Augie Auer passes away
He made a huge contribution to meteorology and had a fantastic personality. Died aged 67.
He apparently had a fatal cardiac arrest last night dining with family in Melbourne.
RIP fella.

Very sad news.
Didn't know the guy but I've always thought I'd like to have a chat to him about the weather (thunderstorms mainly of course!), the vibe I'm getting is he could keep going and talking about the weather as it was a big passion for him. He would need to keep going with me around as once the questions start flowing there's no stopping!
I remember the time he mentioned the possibilities of funnels over Northland once, I'm pretty sure he did.
Also understand he was one of the original storm chasers back in america with his university work.
RIP.
Cheers

Augie's infectious enthusiasm for all things to do with the weather has lead to a lot of people in NZ understanding the way the weather works a little better. He achieved this not just by being good at talking to ordinary people, but by being able to enthuse the media into giving him the air time to say his thing. He was not afraid to stand up and say what he thought, even if it provoked some controversy at times, and you have to admire that. I also admire the way he followed his heart by leaving his academic tenure in the US and moving himself and his family half way around the world to what he knew was a better life. I didnt always agree with some of the things he said, but meteorology in NZ has risen considerably in profile since he arrived here, and his input will certainly be missed - RIP.

Augie was one of my mentors. I feel quite sad to hear of his passing.
Yes, some of his views were quite controversial but he was interesting in that way.
I know that he was a good thunderstorm man and would be proud to wear a NZTS T-shirt.
I liked the way he couldn't get his American accent tongue around certain NZ placenames whilst doing the TV3 weather... like Kawerra,Kawerrahow,Kaaferrow ...and he used to say Grimmith for Greymouth
May there be lots of blue dome days in heaven, ditto weather and a lot of barocyclonic 'leaps' as I thought he used to say
RIP

Very sad, and relatively young too - and his family were with him so sad times for all. Yes he was controversial and the generalisations he made sometimes defied logic, but he made weather forecasting and discussions memorable and interesting... not just because of his accent He truly loved his work and howmany of us have been influenced by his candour and lively willingness to share the long distance outlooks... creating a real insterest in the topics...
Thanks Augie, we are much more wiser and alert to the changing patterns of the weather, the causes and the various influences affecting same.
