In rememberance today of the June 12th 2006 snowstorm a year today .
Chilly -4C minimums in Timaru and Ashburton today (TV1 Weather), that's nothing to compared to the 25-40cm snow on the ground this time last year.

freezing here - feels like there should be *snow*, sad we're missing out :) Even some rain would be nice, we've had barely any now for weeks!

The raw weather over the SI is heading this way by the looks. We should be into what I think will be Aucklands first taste of winter by the weekend with lower temps but clearing weather.

Ruapehu ski areas will get some snow off this sytem but likely not a lot.

Anyone see the high elevation CU this afternoon between 3-5pm towards the SW?.
More an upper level cloud with ice crystals and a fresh coastal NE against an upper level SW flow :? certainly was there but weak.
Can be seen on the 7:10pm satelite.

Maybe a little bit of rain tomorrow still not quite enough though.
Cheers
Jason.

Ony a cold outbreak of frost here , -7.2° here now.
But you only got up to 1C today, according to TV1 Weather. Freezing fog?
BTW Andy, how did Alex fare in the recent cold outbreak that brought snow to the far south?

SSE wind blowing
I see our dewpoints are around 9C so the air is not too dry, looks like a max 15C+ day (average)

Not quite a polar blast, but showers arrived in Chch midafternoon, and temperature dropped to 5C. Quite probably a white dusting on higher parts of the peninsula tonight.
Looks like a cold wet spell coming up for the east of the North Island.

Yes, Ben .There were some spectacular Cu forms as the colder air moved forward. Shame the air pressure wasn't a bit lower and it was summer as thunderstorms activity would of likely formed :(
Here is the leading edge of the front moving over the Little House on the Prairie about 3pm

Yes some of that CU was towering to relativly high levels and certainly wasn't far off from cracking out some thunder, just needed abit more moisture inflow like a NE .
It actually felt like it was going to sleet around 4pm with some really glaciated looking clouds with a rainbow in front and certainly felt cold.
Some moisture will keep us going for abit, just had another breif dolop of rain on the roof too.
Cheers

Yeah now i was driving home from work when i saw that towering CU, looked very nice actually i must say so myself :D pity it wasnt in summer as you say John.
I am also surprised there wasn't abit of hail in those clouds, was very cold.
Rained here for around 15 minutes at about 4 45pm.

I recorded 1.2mm at my site near St. John of God hospital from yesterdays precipitation. Yes quite cold and I suspect the there was snow falling around the tops of Mt. Herbert late yesterday afternoon :)
Here's another picture from yesterday

Less charming here but we got a few hrs. of sun to slightly mitigate a cold breeze.

Great for Michael and great for the eastern farmers! We perhaps do need more southeasterlies than a useless sou'wester over the NI.

Certainly starting to feel the chill back.

Auckland dewpoints only 2C under clear skies so a big temp drop.

Looks like an interesting weather system moving onto NZ mid next week.

Interesting indeed....don't have my hopes up, as the last time it looked promising (2 weeks ago) models flopped on the Tuesday to show nothing of any consequence...they were pretty consistent for a while, tho...we'll see, tho ;) (GFSx and MetVuw models showing it getting pretty cold as well...)

May end up with a frost here in the next day or two.

Looks like an interesting weather system moving onto NZ mid next week.
Looks like a set up for winter thunderstorms in the west and north.
Maybe another critical S'Wester for the east of the country as well.

Now only partly cloudy on Banks Peninsula today, with sun shining at times. Haven't yet heard of any severe weather or road closures in east or central North Island - I think the coldest airmass has now passed.
