Does still look interesting but anything could happen from here.
Be interesting to see the next few runs of the models to give us some what better indication.
At this stage this is what i think might happen.
Thursday- Overcast with scatterd periods of rain and snow to 700m. Rain possibly becoming persistant to heavy for a time after dark and snow lowering to 400m with heavy falls possible. Cold SW winds strong inland and near gale force at times about the coast. High/7C Low/3C
It is good to be safe in forecasting being a few days out especially with such a deepening low moving in from the Tasman.
They can be hard to predict and as we all know the low which produced the June 12th snowstorm last year was a hard one to predict.
Cheers
Jason

Uhm, from my point of view here in Addington you can see some very low level grey "yuck" clouds to the south and west...don't seem to be moving very fast and the sat loops show the same...radar doesn't show much either...gopolks wrote:Looking like a frost in Canterbury tonight.
What happened to the rain they were predicting?
It hasnt clouded over at all.
Clear blue skies by the port hills.

Just coming back from town there is a line of CU going from SE-SW but radar at 4pm shows small amount of precipitation around Birdlings flat.
Otherwise just some upper level harmless cloud and a light SW wind, also noticed a little bit of a sundog, irredecene what ever it's called in the sky this afternoon .
Edit.. Iv'e heard parts of NSW are hovering around 2-3C at the moment with rain and snow on the mountains with this low.
Here is the picture today of the Irredecence or sundog.
Cheers
Jason.

looking at the weather station readings around the area....northland got the cold front (14oC temperatures there in the warm sector) but auckland got the warm and then occluded front...temperature only has gradualy warmed up....
also, windspeeds were alot stronger in the hauraki gulf in that warm sector,....the cold air at the surface in the auckland area has dragged its heals and so we have only had brief pouts of wind...32 knots here
but this station ,on the west coast here, at 700ft altitude (on top of a 700 steep hill (overexposed from the east)) had its nose into the stronger winds above, and recorded 59kts (109kmh) from the east:

(3rd time now I have seen speeds like that at that site from the east)
currently there are though speeds of 51 kts being reported by the nowcastings stations in the outer hauraki gulf too
when the NWer arrives, that station should get some more good speeds

Only up to about 9C in Chch, but only a light frost overnight. Had an unexpected shower this morning - wasn't suppose to get anything until this evening.Cold with light rain at the moment... 9°C after a lengthy frost overnight.
I notice on the noon obs that many stations from about Waikato southwards are on single figures; Gore an icy -1C. Must've been some mean frosts to start the day, plus all that cloud cover spreading over northen and central NZ. No wonder snow is forecast for some inland valleys from Nelson to Canterbury once the rain arrives from the north.

im not a weather expert, but I wouldn't rule it out.gopolks wrote:Is it possible to get snow with a North East wind?
I think theres more of a chance of warm advective snow, with moisture coming in from the NE colliding with the cold air of a depression coming up or around from the south?
anyone feel free too correct me if im wrong
what are Tony's views on this possible event?

Too warm for snow on the Plains - it will stay up on the mountains where it belongs. Looks like southern districts are in for another hammering over the weekend and early part of next week though. If you want your snow fix travel south (now, while you still can!).tornadoman18 wrote:what are Tony's views on this possible event?

Re: Interesting depression next Thursday?
Going back to this. Looks quite interesting. Barometer should really drop as the low passes over the country. Interesting to see what pressure it gets down to
Will it be a record?
