Some similarities between the two in respect of rainfall, but not particularly so otherwise.

Yes, July 1982 was dry but with more of a very weak SW/W flavour so the brightest areas were mainly in the east. June 1982 had some weak southerly and easterly airs which made Wellington very cloudy but with little wind (39 hrs consecutive calm at one stage). Central districts had a 4-day spell which was quite wet. Alexandra and the Mackenzie were particularly plagued with freezing fogs and hoar frosts in June 1982 but OK in July. All that followed a dry, sunny and mild May.
July 2001 was part of a dry spell for central districts in particular which was getting pretty serious by the end of September - in Wellington 12-month totals were down to about half of average, the lowest since 1914/1915. Various plant species were under huge stress. Ample rains from October onwards restored the balance. I had rather hoped that a record low 12-month had been set first however.
