Tokoroa funnel

Unread post by TokWW »

A series of photos from a colleague here in Tokoroa to be seen on his website... photos from December last year... 31st Dec 06, 17:33pm

Very surprised to see so accurate a picture - as it happened the humidity must have been very high for the vapour to be seen in the small active touchdown.

Thanks to admin for shifting - needed a new thread :)

Thanks for the interesting pics there.

I was chasing that storm and observed the feature in the photos. My initial thoughts were that it was possibly a tornado but then I wrote it off as scud. It did look spectacular though the way it dropped all the way to the ground. I'll look back at my pics and see what I can find.

My best photo of this is blurred as it was taken from a moving car.
But Ron and Mary had a better view of it than me. If they could clearly see rotation then yes, no question, it was a tornado. :)

BTW Scud is stratus cloud created by turbulence. Often seen around thunderstorms.

Thought I may as well share by out of focus photo. Taken from within a moving car racing toward the storm.

Yes, that is at the Lichfield Dairy Factory exit travelling south about 8kms north of town, view approx south. Definitely same shaped cloud feature... yes exactly the same shape and both from same perspective at very closely the same timing!!

The third photo seemed to show rotational movement at the lower extemes of it:

Hot on the trail ;) Good memory :D Thanks for the help and support!

A shot here 3 minutes later than my previous shot. The apparent tornado was weakening.

something we need to bear in mind....scud can easily hide a funnel.....you can see the funnel in the SW segment of the close up photo (hard outer edge)....with scud cloud to the right of that...
thats a great rope out shot there nzstorm

this is a tornado bagged i reckon :)

My photos capture the tornado from 7.13pm to 7.21pm. An 8 minute tornado, not bad.

This is really cool! Love it. Definately some rotation, wish I was there!

Sort've give more life to ones original interest in the weather, this is the type of stuff I love about it. Little things like this. And especially since it occured in NZ.

Good stuff TokWW and NZstorm!

Cheers
