Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
A few photo's i took from the approaching storm.
Sturges Rd, Henderson Heights, looking North, ± 15.30 hrs. impressive rainfall.
Awaroa Rd, Sunnyvale, looking over the Waikumete Cemetery. ± 16.40 hrs. Very dark skies and beautifull rainbow developing. Quite a few vertical lightning strikes too but unable to capture.
Couldn't fit the rainbow in one shot.
Not too much rain out West yet.
Sun is shining above Titirangi 17.34 hrs.

In the link you posted Foggy someone refers to hearing that a supercell formed in the Hauraki gulf. I find this unlikely.

Another shot, strange structure started to form here.
That will always be wishful dreaming in NZ.David wrote:In the link you posted Foggy someone refers to hearing that a supercell formed in the Hauraki gulf. I find this unlikely.

If you also read this part I mention us as having the remnants. It was a good storm for the localities of where it hit hardest I actually should of said it was not a good storm here. Anyway, it was nice to hear some thunder againDavid wrote:Damn these isolated thunderstorms, I am sick of others getting the best and us having the scraps.

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
But then again this forum isn't at all for complaints about the weather you get.. there's far too many nil-content posts on the board i.e. "when on earth is it going to snow in Chch" or "the horrid SW has risen to gale force" etc etc etc which spams the board. And it needs to stop. Mother nature doesn't care where you are!David wrote:If you also read this part I mention us as having the remnants. Todays spectacular storm must be to herald the return of Jim Hickey!
Now for tomorrow. Another afternoon Thunderstorm would be nice. I just hope the southerly quarter change doesn't come in to early and spoil things. Heres hoping.

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
I agree with those sentiments Foggy. But it's not nearly as bad as the "when is it going to rain properly?" moaning that goes on all the time on a certain Australian forum. What's tragi-comic about many of those doing such complaining there is their absolute refusal to accept that climate change could be involved.

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
After the storm its a bit cold, 11C, and because skies have generally cleared and will probably remain so between showers overnight, it could be colder tonight. This could cause less heating and a lower dewpoint tomorrow. Could this decrease storm chances? But I myself would be delighted for another storm tomorrow afternoon, preferably one that centres over east Auckland...

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
No, Im sorry, ill have to agree with David . That storm was a little weak in my opinion, hardly vigorous lightning. There was about 30 "clean" strikes in 3 hours that I saw from all around the city and the storm didnt extend far out east like they usually do

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
At least in Sth Waikato we got a follow through with a good strike at our mill right at the regional substation. Took an 80MVA transformer out and the other two fellover and took the whole site down for 2h 15mins and the local Tokoroa township for another 30mins more. So I ammissing about 3hrs of data today - and the rainfall totally! We had just one really heavy strike and about 5mins of really heavy rain and then it all calmed down again and the huge site was silent.
It crept upon us so quickly,we did not see it coming so I missed some possible great photos, but I did take some afterwards on my way home on the bike. Will post later. Hmmm, 600VA UPS, 3 hrs operation without a monitor,,, sounds interesting...

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
Yes I saw that on the storm tracker too Cameo1, but seems to have died away now. Went outside and looked half an hour ago and heard a very distant rumble.
Could be some more thunder tonight, but I wasn't expecting any.

Anyone know what direction it is moving in.

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
I think thunder will be on and off for a day or so, but will be exacerbated by daytime heating tomorrow, so lets see and hope that cold pool really intensifies though we may get a real doozy tonight if one hits a pocket or two of warm surface moisture when it comes in off the Tazzy

1mm in last 10mins and thunder heard with a flash about 15mins ago...
Must have weakened as it crossed the Auckland area as it was not at all heavy here.
