It was supposed to be fine here yesterday and today, but what you call a blue dome day is very rare in Auckland, and sunny skies often are spoiled by cloud such as the last 2 days

Re: Report Your Frost or (How low did you go)
Thats not much of a frost, if any? Maybe the cold, uncomfortable SW gales weren't delivering much of a chill to form frost crystals?Michael wrote:Just 4° this morning
I was reading a book the other day and it said that there weren't very many frosts in Auckland as it was much norther than frost cities like Dunedin/Christchurch etc.

Re: Report Your Frost or (How low did you go)
It depends where abouts in Auckland you are. Because Auckland is surrounded by sea and harbours on the west and east most places close to the sea don't experience frost, but depending on the exposure or sheltering of certain wind directions some parts more often get frosts. Whenupai aerodrome has an average of 8 screen frosts per annum whereas Albert Park has only recorded one screen frost. Southern areas further away from the city and harbours are more susceptible to frosts. Waiuku is a good example, where air temperatures occasionally reach -2C. Local topographic differences also influence the distribution of frost. Here at my location frosts vary year to year, with an average of 3 screen frosts per annum over the last 4 years. 2007 had one screen frost and two ground frosts, last winter had 4 screen frosts and 16 ground frosts.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:there weren't very many frosts in Auckland
So I suppose where Michael lives there aren't any frosts because of the wind, so 0C must be extreme there. 0C here is no surprise, average annual extreme minimum is -1.0C.

We get our coldest mornings when the SW dies out in the evening and it becomes totally clear say at 2am either when it will be replaced by NE the next day.Mentioned it as 4° is quite low here well in to September

Re: Report Your Frost or (How low did you go)
I find 3.4C cold for September, along with the 2.8 and 2.9 recorded a few days ago, but I wouldn't call it unusual.Michael wrote:We get our coldest mornings when the SW dies out in the evening and it becomes totally clear say at 2am either when it will be replaced by NE the next day.Mentioned it as 4° is quite low here well in to September
From last winter up until mid January this year the more frequent cooler weather patterns gave unusually cold nights each month. At my location the monthly extreme minima for:
Sep 3.3
Oct 2.8 (very low)
Nov 5.6
Dec 4.6 (very low)
I have calculated that for the majority of months this year, the standard deviation from the mean minimum is smaller than the corresponding months last year.

Re: Report Your Frost or (How low did you go)
Wellington region also seems to experience much variation in frost frequency and distribution, with the airport never seeming to drop to 0C, but other stations in the Hutt Valley/other valleys recording several air minimums of -3 to -4C each year. Must also be due to the local topography (valleys) and sheltering from certain directions. (I've hardly seen the Wellington airport metar report nil wind, same with Auckland - when it is often calm where I live in the mornings)RWood wrote:Virtually unknown at Kelburn obs. - since 1931 there have only been 4 readings, 2 of 0C and 2 of -0.1C.

-1.6ºC in Tokoroa but at 9am, the wind turnewd from SE around to the North and it then ambled on around to NW and gusting to 45km/hr... still quite cool outside in the wind. Current temp 14:50 = 15.2, max of 16.4ºC. Still fully clouded.

Re: Report Your Frost or (How low did you go)
Down to -1C here with ice evident frozen on most surfaces .
Sounds like the Alps and even the Foothills got a good dumping last night.
I was talking to someone from work who lives in the Oxford area, and reackons there is a good 15-20cm down to about 400m.
Certainly looked coverd in snow today looking west, a sight (not often) seen on a blue dome day in October.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Report Your Frost or (How low did you go)
An air frost here of minus 3.3ºC with minus 7.7ºC on the grass, this being the coldest October reading at the site
I was disappointed that Jim hickey did not mention the frost on his TV weather report tonight
Frosts this late in the year should be of concern to growers and horticulturalists
