Unexpected Canterbury rain

Unread post by Razor »

Not very often this happens as mentioned on the other thread- forcast as late as last night was for a fine day here, started raining very unexpectedly about 10pm and has really settled in this morning.

No thunderstorms but this stuff is gold for the farmers. Looks to be a stationary front parked over us, rain progressively getting steadier and heavier this morning. Now up to 11mm in ChCh- any reports from the rural districts folks?

Easing off now, and looks to clear soon looking at the radar.

Another good dump of rain on Thursday by the looks of it as well.

And a little unexpected convection in Otago this afternoon to, a few heavy isolated showers by the looks and a lightning strike or two. Nothing to major. Interesting and cool to see though, a sign that summer is coming. :D

Edit, 6pm: A Cb now appearing in South Canty, cool! Doesn't look to be thundery at the mo, not sure if it will become so. Would chase but can't, dam I'm glad I'm exited by this. LOL.

Cheers

Some steady rain overnight and into this morning very welcome indeed, cleared up by around lunchtime.
Just had a look I can see that CB in south Canterbury, its a pitty a good southerly isnt charging up the coast as the wind has just swung back to the NE here.
Waimak was bank to bank this afternoon after the rains of the last few days in them alps.
Apparently there were alot of blackouts up around the foothills area early on Sunday morning not only due to severe gales but lightning strikes hitting some pylons.
Another good burst looks likly on Thursday here, abit more than this dolop.
Interesting times ahead :-k .
Cheers

I just mean I'm still excited over storms etc, agreed this cb isn't exciting if you like. Remember when I first took a pic of a Cb down at the Southshore spit? I was dam excited, LOL. Looks like it has just produced an isolated heavy shower or two.

Cheers

Must be out to sea - clear skies above me where I am on BP. 8pm radar did show a tiny patch of yellow over outer Akaroa Harbour (I'm nearer the head), but wouldn't have been a thunderstorm and must've moved on quickly.

Big rain on thur/fri looking more and more on the cards now  may cause some problems for many local rivers that are already full.

I forgot to add this nice castelatus shot just before sunset.
I like the stripe going through the middle :)

What a nice peaceful photo - one of the advantages you have of living around the countryside John.
Very similar to what the view looking south from my yard is like. :)
Here you're lucky not to get houses and aerials and powerlines etc. in your photos. #-o
Sticking back to your clouds, I've seen those types of clouds several times but usually in the morning which will indicate unstable conditions for the afternoon's convective development. Often there has not been any storms following though, sadly.
