Anticyclonic Weather for this Summer over the South Island

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Jim Hickey said last night on TV One's weather that NIWA has predictions for an anticyclonic summer over the South Island.
Sadly this looks the case with a weak La Nina forming.
A good example of this is the new low approaching Northland this WE/Early next week.
Lots of fine days are install for Canterbury. :) or :(
Drought?

Probably a good thing, otherwise the volume of complaints about summers would get even higher.

Coastal Canterbury, East Otago:
Average or above average temperatures are likely.
If there is less westerlies how do they come up with this prediction? Just curious.

The higher frequency of anticyclones would mean higher temps inland but cooler on the coast. Could be a scorcher of a summer for Alexandra if the weather is more settled as predicted.

Good example of anticyclonic weather this morning about the coast, unexpected light rain and drizzle 8) .
I was hoping to wake up to blue dome skies this morning instead overcast with 2mm in the rain gague.
Should clear this afternoon though which could mean some beafy afternoon showers over the foothills.
There is a chance coming up on Tuesday for TS, but I think we will wait and see first :-k .
Cheers
Jason.

Not necessarily. The La Nina summerof 1988/9 (admittedly a strong La Nina) had above average temps everywhere. Departures throughout Canty-Otago-Southalnd were genrally 1.4C-2.0C.
