Towering beautifully over the Kaimai Ranges, sadly it lacks the cold air above to set it going :(

What the heck is going on. :-k

Im sure this was not forcast... the farmers in the area will be dancing in the paddoks. Just been heavy constant warm rain for ages now. At times it is really heavy.

That's pretty random. There was no significant rain forecast anywhere today. How can Cambridge have had 40mm in one hour? That's crazy. We have nothing up here.
Radar loop suggests it could come up this way but it will probably have dissipated by then.

Actually 37.8mm in one hour was the maximum at Cambridge yesterday evening, which easily surpasses the stations previous record of 31.0mm on one hour. That rate hasn't been reached here since 2005 :(

I don't know, but it seems to have acceptable readings every other time I see it.

That rainfall reading at Cambridge is quite possible. I believe it. Cb tops were low, about 4000m but there was ample moisture/low level CAPE over the Waikato yesterday for very heavy showers. Different story today, the air has really dried out. Dp's 11C. However, as the low level atmosphere is quite cold today, some weaker showers still possible this afternoon.

Looks like the blue dome sky days have returned again 8) for awhile anyway, looks like there is some weakish CU inland too.
Could be another schorcher on Monday ( xmas eve ) I am going for 28-31C for some places under the warm NW.
Today back in 2004 Christchurch experienced a thunderstorm which brought flooding to many streets in the CBD and good sized hail in some other parts.
If you go back to the 2004 December posts you will read all about it, I missed that one just got shaved by it #-o .
Cheers

Interesting its the first time in awhile that a fresh NE has blown right throughout the night here, and now its strong gusting to around 45kmh at times.
I can even smell the sea being 7 minutes drive from the beach.
Also in the news is a fire at the recyling factory in Kaiapoi on Stone st, its blocked off at the moment so no point in playing mr sight see and taking photo's.
I see MS have a low risk out for thunderstorms here tomorrow and heavy showers in the forecast, It will possibly be NW so I dont think much will happen.
Although having said that it is pretty much in the peak of storm season now so anything could happen 8-[ .
Cheers
Jason.

I walked from Southshore to New Brighton along the beach today and that northeasterly sure was strong and relentless. The sea was pretty wild and choppy, breaking (about mid-tide) beyond the pier. Not surprisingly there were few people in the water, but a few were paragliding along the beach.

just an update, we were in the Coromandel over the last 4 days, Cooks beach.....and I made a bet with someone that it would rain the next day, due to an eastlerly surge (Last Friday)....and it did, all morning,...41mm even, recorded at the Cooks beach weather station!
(sorry for the late posting)

I could have made some money on the bet (was clear skies the evening before, but the signs were there (e.g bubbling Cu on the hirizon to the east, and other subtle signs in the clouds around)
