Re: When's it going to rain?
Could be some rain in thunderstorms over Canterbury tomorrow, depending on onshore flow, but will have to wait and see

Re: When's it going to rain?
Light spillover rain in Chch now; must be alot wetter about and west of the mountains.
Don't know about thunderstorms in Canterbury tomorrow - maybe South Canterbury later according to MetService, but hopefully not in central Chch tomorrow evening 8-9pm as there's a free outdoor showing of a film (11th Hour) in the square then.

Re: When's it going to rain?
The problem at this time of year is getting a sea breeze going, light and fickle at best. If an isolated storm can develop I would say it would be right on the coast where there is the chance of convergence and most likely south of Dunedin.Could be some rain in thunderstorms over Canterbury tomorrow, depending on onshore flow, but will have to wait and see

I'll renege on my thunderstorm prediction from yesterday, conditions now not suited.

Re: When's it going to rain?
Good surface moisture down there for a change, 14/15C dewpoints
I see the temp/ dewpoint readings from Chch Airport for the last 24 hrs read more like typical Auckland conditions

One or two strikes in inland Otago this afternoon! Diurnal heating has been strong enough to trigger the convection within a weak frontal boundary moving through the area.

Re: When's it going to rain?
7 mm of gentle rain so far at Tawa today. Lower temperatures of 16 to 18 degrees have limited evaporation and the low rain rate has given it time to soak in instead of running off. That breaks a period of 22 days without rain.
Nice to have the rain back, but the sunny warm days have also been welcome.

Big puffy clouds down to the south of here. Looks to be about Geraldine, Mt Peel way.

Re: When's it going to rain?
There's been substantial rain in the city from mid-afternoon, I reckon up to 30+ mm, though I find it hard to judge such things. Damn car broke down - or rather wouldn't restart from its parked position - in a narrow city street, 2 days after getting fixup maintenance! All at the peak of the rain. Mr Murphy is still hale and hearty.

Re: When's it going to rain?
Wellington seems to be having a soaking - around 60mm at Tawa, Central City and Makara, 82mm at Karori Sanctuary, and 119mm at Akatarawa Hills!
Sad that we not going to get that much across the whole central and northern N Island - would be a huge step towards breaking the drought for those areas still suffering.

Re: When's it going to rain?
Yeah, certainly has been a timely rain event for the Wellington region. My Pinehaven Station has recorded 35.5 mm of constant rain to 9am. This is in line with other nearby Upper Hutt Stations and backed by my manual guages. Interesting local variation in that just a few kms up the road that the Akatarawa Station has recorded over 100mm!! Still, a much needed soaking here, may help to stave off further water restrictions.

Re: When's it going to rain?
That was quite a good storm, maybe because I have seen lightning for about a year around here, but it certainly was full of strikes.kiwisk8er wrote:Just had a thunderstorm here in Dunedin. Now raining lots which is good.
There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

Re: When's it going to rain?
So with just 2 rain events (effectively) separated by 3 weeks and a bit, the city (and many other parts by the sound of things) will easily pass the March average! And the YTD average will also be exceeded - and this time I doubt if 3 dry weeks will follow.

Re: When's it going to rain?
Warm and calm today. Light rain most of yesterday and heavier last night early morning.
We got 62mm but as you might have seen on TV1 weather, Rai Valley got 90mm and I would imagine that total would have climbed higher last night ???
Rain radar showing more coming early evening, but not looking like it at this stage.
Hope the rain moves into Waikato today and other parts in need !!!!!
That TV shot last night, of the girl hanging below Balloon in the Wairarapa – I couldn’t believe how brown/white the pastures where !!!!

Re: When's it going to rain?
hopefully the band will move more north and graze auckland with the heavy showers i see in the current radar, but with the bulk of the convection looking to track across the central north island, i think itll be another dry weekend for northland.Manukau heads observer wrote:there seems to be some good activity developing on the front to our WNW...a good sign at the moment!

Re: When's it going to rain?
Should be a warm night here with the cloud cover and rising dewpoints, the forecast 17C looks a bit low, currently 20C.
looking forward to hearing rain on the roof tomorrow.
