some food for thought: the series of fronts we just survived were not really much out of the ordinary isobar-wise, with the exception of the massive initial injection of polar air early on. is this what caused such activity, ie, initial cooling of the surrounding air?

A combination of cold upper air originating from the southern lattitudes and low level moisture off the North Tasman Sea. In these situations strong wind shear and fast moving fronts also assist in thunderstorm development.

Probably the warmer than normal SST for June? plus low sun height.
