Re: Frosty winter mornings
Down to 3C in Grey Lynn with ice on the car but no ground frost. First signs of a frost here in a couple of years I think.

Re: Frosty winter mornings
Down to -2.2C this morning here in the city, airport might have got down to -3 like yesterday morning.
Just 2C now but it's a typical blue dome with haze clearing.

Re: Frosty winter mornings
Should be similar tonight but more widespread due to the southerly not tempering it.

Re: Frosty winter mornings
Not as cold as what I thought it may get, but when the anticyclone is over us, we may see some cold minuses.
I wonder how Ophir and Central Otago will get on.
Nothing much from down there as far a cold weather temperature reports? No freezing fogs?
Interesting and nice to see that frost and ice in Auckland this morning.

Re: Frosty winter mornings
Not as cold as I was expecting last night - have not seen the temperature down to 1C before midnight for a long time. Dropped to a low of -0.9C, I thought it could have been as low as -2C. (could have been some wind disturbance, weather station max gust this morn was 5km/h around dawn). The station at Botany (close to here) reported -1.5C.
More frost this morning though - probably because the temperature was under 0 for longer. But today, even a dangerous slippery icy patch on the footpath!
Tonight looks potentially colder than last night, but time will tell.

Re: Frosty winter mornings
I don't think I have ever seen the metservice forecasting a low of 0C for Auckland! (they may change it)
It has been 2C at the airport the last few nights, and if it gets to 0C overnight, should be a great frost here.
I'm hoping for a record low (for my temp readings), even though I'm not convinced it will happen.
Last traces of frost here took until after 10am to disappear. Just 6 degrees 10mins ago.

Re: Frosty winter mornings
New record low here for my station, -2.7C and the airport got down to -3.9C which hasn't happened in a few years!
It's getting frosty here these nights by 9pm really.. and the MetService have us down to -4C again tonight.

Re: Frosty winter mornings
If it stays clear all night wouldnt be surprised if tomorrow is under 10 if the high cloud moves across with no wind.

Theres a beauty brewing around Dunedin this morning. Minus 4 out at the airport, stars are like maglites and so still I can hear sheep chewing on the other side of Nor East Valley.

Re: Frosty winter mornings
JEEZ it was a cold one last night down in Ohakuni. Car was frozen over at 8pm lol. Had a great week down at the snow, today being the best Not a cloud in the sky so you could see right to the horrizon perfectly. Still is quite a bit of snow around the town too which was suprising.
Bit off topic.... the crater lake up there is definitly some what disturbed at the moment. Very stong smells coming off it.

Correct, I'm watching the seismograph with interest.j--me--h wrote:Bit off topic.... the crater lake up there is definitly some what disturbed at the moment. Very stong smells coming off it.
IGNS have noted the increased gas emissions in the latest alert bulletin.
I'm not saying anything is going to happen anytime soon, just it's elevated above it's normal level and it might stay that way, quieten down or go through another phase of eruptive activity, only way to know is to watch, wait and see.alert bulletin: Jun 17 2008, 4:00 pm - Ruapehu Volcano wrote:The airborne gas plume measurements show the SO2 emission has gradually increased since last year’s eruption and the CO2 flux has varied. The emission rates of both SO2 and CO2 gases have shown significant increases since April 2008, being about ten times above the typical background. Our latest measurements on June 12 remains high.
The Crater Lake temperature has remained elevated and fluctuates between 34 and 37 °C. The latest measurement was 35.2 °C (June 12). Sustained heat from depth is required to keep the temperature this high for this length of time. It is believed that the source of this heat is magma within the volcano conduit. This magma is also producing the higher than normal gas flow and other chemical changes in the lake.

Re: Frosty winter mornings
Same minimum temperature overnight this morning as what it was yesterday morning but no frost this morning.
I was quite surprised as after the events of last WE and the fact it is July, the overnight minimums this week, haven't been all that severe, despite the intense anticyclone moving over us.
any quotes from Ophir?
Might be something in the weeks ahead
