Frontal system 11th-13th July
Looks like a moderate event coming, nothing huge, but I thought I would start a thread about it.
Frontal trough set to move onto us on Friday, but losing a lot of its punch up north before it arrives. SI west coast could get a decent dump, and the snowfields might get some snow if the temps stay as low as this morning!
Interestingly, the models are forecasting a bunch of lazy highs dominating the area after it passes, so could be a long period of cold mornings and boring weather for a time.

Re: Frontal system 11th-13th July
After the recent run of interesting weather, this next system doesn't look too interesting. Some good rainfall in the west and also thunderstorms over the South Island West Coast early Saturday as colder upper air crosses.
Looks like a weak cold trough may cross the country early next week.

Atleast it will flush this cold air out and we can get back to more normal temps up this way.

Yes. Sadly nothing sexy about this system, back to boring weather.

I might start a thread about that. I love these long drawn out winter calms. It lets your hair settle before the wind picks up again.Vertigo wrote:

Re: Frontal system 11th-13th July
hmm, the system is looking nicer now. nicely formed low in the tasman with frontal bands all around. nice to look at, but whether it brings the goods is another question.

its looking messy out in the tasman.. lots of intersecting fronts and some electrical activity. its fairly wet today in auckland, but definitely not stormy.

Looks like Auckland will get around 30mm from this system. Thunderstorm risk is confined to the South Island West Coast with a semi-cold airmass crossing that area tomorrow.

89mm and counting at Arthurs Pass Village, which means there will be good spillover going into the hydrolakes I'm picking

Re: Frontal system 11th-13th July
Big winds in Wellington tonight...I think the summit of the Rimutakas will see gusts to 150km/h. Not to mention some pretty heavy rainfalls along the nation's north-west facing regions.
Also looking at some higher temperatures. Northland's low was 14 degrees warmer than it was yesterday! Highs should be close to 20degrees in some eastern areas tomorrow...not too shabby for mid July, in the depth of winter!

Dunedin's 19C max - July record? Still 17C there at 6.30pm. Reasonably mild 11C in Chch now - not what you'd call tropical, but certainly alot warmer than it has been lately.

Re: Frontal system 11th-13th July
Some could be fooled into thinking it was Spring! But alas winter's just tricking us....mind you for those from Auckland northwards winter really ends in about 4 weeks....I've lived in Auckland 8 years and still find it weird how short winter is here!
Still 16 near Whangarei, 15 in Dunedin..it's a mild night....a frost free weekend for the country!

Yes. The coolness and the warmthness of winter depends on the systems moving across the country.

Actually think it might be 'echoes' ...rain appearing on the radar due to the clouds/mountains. Raining heavily through western Central Otago.

Re: Frontal system 11th-13th July
Models are suggesting some rain for CHCH overnight and various stations around are quite warm with the airflow we are getting...Burwood weather station showing the HIGH for the day there of 16.6 at 10:28 pm ...quite warm for this time of year!

No heating all on this morning. Some great gusts last night but it has now dropped away to nothing.
Looks like its going to be a great day.

Hi All, first post in this forum.
Apparently it was 21°C in Kaikoura at 1am on this morn. Wonder if that's a July record?
