some seriously strong gusts here now - 3.3 mtr high set of windows in aluminium frame in our upper lounge is bowing in from the wind pressure in the highest gusts

962.9mb on the 3pm SYNOP from Cape Reinga AWS... so could be a new record beating Cyclone Ida in 1959?
I'd be interested to know what that site got down to... Paul?

Re: Bomb Low: Jul 25-29th
My 3pm analysis had the low 10 miles southwest of Cape Reinga with a central pressure near 960 hPa.
Foggy, 962.9 was Cape reinga's lowest pressure. At 4pm it was 963.5 and the wind was westr northwesterly 25kts.

Strange as this may seem but I have been out at Takanini from about 1445 - 1530. Bright sunshine sneaking through the cloud (I had to wear sunnies on the way there and on the way back). Currently it is moderately windy here (Wattle Downs) and yes the sun has disappeared.

Re: Bomb Low: Jul 25-29th
no power here for last hour and half
just a quick update on dial up on the laptop
49 knot gusts here and baro at record for me low levels
amazing stuff
I am worried about the SW wind on the other side of the low, as we will get the full force from that
went down to the beach at high tide.....but the level was OK ,as its not a big tide today ....very rough conditions though and 45 to 50 knot winds on the beach!

Definitely has eased here from several hours ago. There's a gust or two each hour 80km/h+ but overall its not as strong as earlier. Pressure only dropping slowly now.

Decent rain falling up in the Pinnacles (Coromandel, East of Thames).
So far here in Tauranga we have got off lightly. Fingers crossed we continue to have that luck.

Power's been off here for most of the arvo. Just catching up. That reading for Ida was taken on March 15.

I find it very hard to get onto the MetService Website. When I do it's just rubbish but I have manged to get the info I require anyyway.
Anyway, just wondering if any records will happen with this system, ie. hPa-idge or will it fill in as it moves away to the east tomorrow?

I see on the news that the Kauaeranga River at Thames has burst it's banks and closed State Highway 25. This river is feed from the Pinnacles area.tgsnoopy wrote:Decent rain falling up in the Pinnacles (Coromandel, East of Thames).

The show from this storm around Auckland was at the east coast beaches, usually flat, sandy with few waves, today they were like a boiling cauldron.

Then went up to Orewa where the wind was stronger. I had a lucky escape for the car as I first parked it under a Norfolk PIne but decided to move it quick. As I pulled out some other sucker pulled into my park and copped a branch big enough to dint their car and break the windscreen! :rolleyes
I noticed the power out up there.

Re: Bomb Low: Jul 25-29th
Got home safely with the rain steadily getting heavier going over the Rimutukas.
The strongest gusts are on a weakening trend now in the Auckland area. The big gusts now are affecting the Coromandel Peninsula - Slipper Island gusting 137km/hr & 5pm, and Golden Valley gusting 133km/hr at 6pm and White Island gusted 156 at 5pm and 143km/hr at 6pm. This is consistent with the strongest winds being to the south of the Occlusion - the frontal warm sector would lie out to the northeast of the North Island.
So even though there is a tight pressure gradient around the low, the winds over Northland aren't that strong right now. This is because of the tightly curved isobars around the low. However, once the low moves on, gale to severe gale southwesterlies are expected in its wake over the upper North Island due to a much less curved but still very strong pressure gradient.

Re: Bomb Low: Jul 25-29th
Hi All - been out for the past couple hours - can anyone tell me what the lowest pressure reading has been so far?? And is the low still deepening? I've been flat out with interviews and haven't had a chance to check for a while.
Cheers!
Cheers!
