Yes some hot humid days last summer with NE winds, some reaching 27oC.

The only other case of 30oC at Owairaka was a max of 30.1oC on 20-Feb-1955, but not sure what wind direction on that day was.

What are the extreme highest dewpoints that Auckland has experienced in summer before?

i think those 30oC days was when there was a large intense anticlyone, with a big fetch of NE winds onto us, and that sinking air in the anticylone had warmed the atmosphere up through alot of height,if I remember correctly

as for highest DP, I have seen 22oC in the area before :)

Looks like the lifted index values will be dipping to around zero again this afternoon over the central North Island! That cb yesterday Paul didn't show up well on the IR pics but you could make out a lot of cloud there.

Already looks good today in Matangi (Hamilton), Higher Dew point 14.2, and Humidity 80% thunderstorm breeding ground! :D
Update: there doesn't seem to be much CAPE at the moment but well see.

Yep, Mechanics Bay reported light to moderate NE'ers on and a few days prior to that date. Amazing that T-mins at Owairaka were also about 20.5°C.

And yes, I think Henderson has reached over 30.0°C on numerous occasions.

I have Digest information that confirms Henderson with 33.1C on 3/2/1998 (average daily max for the month there was 28.1C, in a record-breaking month for NZ). Cliflo would have full details on monthly max. values over its history, or daily values for that matter.

A Gazette extract reporting the weather for January 1960 notes exceptionally high temperatures in parts of the Auckland province late in the month. Kerikeri had 93.7F on the 30th, Whakatane 94.0F on the 29th. There's little detail about the synoptic situation, unfortunately. It would be interesting to have more details.

Edit: re Feb 1955, Albert Park recorded a monthly low temperature of 60.0F (15.6C).

And the day before on the 2nd 32.4C was recorded, that was a record only to be broken again with the 33.1C the next day. There was a 14 day period to Feb 8th where the average daily max was 30.1C.

There is some lightning activity on the lightning radar on north bit of the cold front coming, it seems it will eventually pay a visit to the Auckland Area, I will check in the afternoon when things will start to pop up here there and everywhere.

Looking like the thunderstorm risk with that front will pass to the north of the country Tornado Tim. I think Tuesday could evolve into a thunderstorm day for inland North Island as a cold trough crosses but timing of the coldest upper air will be a factor.

Noticably more cooler here in CHCH today than yesterday even although if still managed to reach 27.3 degrees at jeffs station. Thick high cloud keeping conditions bearable. 22 degrees currently quite dull outside now. Heading back down to Timaru and Waimate tomorrow. The forecast down there in South Canterbury looks quite interesting with a high risk of Thunderstorms for Otago and South Canterbury. Metservice saying 15mm diametre hail possibly larger with gusts to 80km/h and heavy showers. Boy do Cantabrians need some rain. Its amazing how much lower the river levels are from here to Timaru from 3 weeks ago to now. Some barely have a drop of water in them. Looking like another warm end to this week with gusty Northwesterlies for here again and more heavy rain in the west. Quite interesting looking activity actually out in the Tasman with very heavy falls out there. I have this funny feeling the word drought is going to be a common topic before long :-s

I think temps will flare once the sun comes out from behind the NW arch...on a side note, went for a "Sunday drive" today with the family up to Arthur's Pass...first time I had ever been past Springfield...wow, what an amazing drive...views and all (even with the rain and cold wind at Arthur's Pass...even saw some Kea's! :-) ) Next time will spend more time and hike to the rock formations at Castle Hill...even got to feel the full force of the NW'er out there...Neat! Great time had by all...

Each consecutive model run has been predicting a rather wet period from Saturday to about Wednesday week (blocking high to the east situation). Will be interesting to see if this eventuates as it is rather dry here now (less than 10mm has fallen in the last 2 weeks).

Only picked up 5mm in yesterday's front - less than I was expecting, but oh well I had a morning exam and afternoon exam yesterday so wasn't really thinking about the weather.

i think by the time the front get this far north, there wont be much left in it...just like the last one...
unless a low can move down the front from the north to hit the upper NI

yes, after this week of SW winds, its going to get drier and drier alright
