New Rain Radars?
When can we expect to here and see the Hawks Bay or BOP rain radar is up and running? Im not sure what one metservice said they would have running 1st? But if my memory is correct both will be running by then end of the year?
That should make weather watching in NZ that much more exciting, i cant wait

I'm pretty sure the time frame is much longer than that. Something along the lines of one per year. So it will be either HB or BOP this year, then the other one in the following year. Then I think they go onto the West Coast in 2011?
I don't think they could afford to build more than one per year.

I recall it was more Gisborne rather than Hawkes Bay that was goin in next. Seem to think it was 2010 though.
Sounds like Puwhenua won't happen as it'll cost far to much to get mains power to it.

That's the only reference I could find in here.Weather Watcher, on Tue 20/05/2008 21:34 wrote:There will be more new weather radars installed around New Zealand during the next few years. The next one will be in the Gisborne/Hawkes Bay region, and should be operational by this time next year. This will be followed by one in Bay of Plenty about 6 months later. Further radars are planned for the South Island and the Far North. Weather radars are very expensive items, and there is quite a lot involved in getting one up and running but MetService is committed to expanding the network.

Current plans are for one new radar a year over the next 4-5 years. The next radar will be in the Gisborne/Hawkes Bay area, and is still due to come online about the middle of this year. The following radar will probably be about a year later (i.e. mid 2010).

Re: New Rain Radars?
Great to hear about the up and coming more radars across the country which should give us a fair indication when low systems cross over a wider area.
However would be nice if the radars actually worked on MS, as they seem to crap out in the sight of bad weather not good at all .
Maybe they need to look at improving thier internet service to customers first one would think.
Cheers
Jason.
