Re: CAPEable Late February and Early March
We went down to the Waikato for a lightning show, we certainly got that and a storm that started to resemble a classic supercell for a while. Unfortunately the storm fell apart about 8pm as the convergence/heat eased.
But a great show. I havn't checked my photos yet.

Great photos.
Spwill, whereabouts in the Waikato were those shots taken. Was that north of Hamilton?

WOW!!! GREAT PHOTOS!!! And you're right, it does have quite a bit of supercellular structure to it!
Gregg, those hills resemble Taupiri I think... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 24&t=h&z=9

Tim, your photos from Matangi were pretty good also. I have fond memories of Matangi, where I used to stay as a kid, with my cousins in Bellevue Road.

We watched the Storm from near Te Hoe northeast of Huntly.
Got on the east side of the convergence line so missed the view of the Cb tops catching the evening sunlight which must have looked spectacular from SH 1 but we saw some amazing structure on the east side .
photo, approaching Storm.

Re: CAPEable Late February and Early March
Oh cool Gregg. I love Matangi So rural yet close to town as well.
It always seems to get the storms where I am... which is quite cool.
Man that storm traveled FAST! I can't believe that it went that far north so quickly in such a short amount of time.
Amazing! I knew that where I was didn't have the core over it as the time between the lightning and the thunder were about 5 secs away so i figured.
Anyway Great day wasn't it, Sunny to start with and then a nice thunderstorm to put us in a good mood?

Great pics guys!
Nah, from downtown Akld, Hamilton City is about 130km by road and about 115km as the crow flies (Henderson would be about same). Add a 6-7 kms for Matangi.

Great stuff NZstorm and Spwill! Good old fashioned chase, I'd hope I could do one more down here before the season ends.

An unstable looking SW flow early next week down there. The storm season usually perks up again in Canterbury for a few weeks in Autumn.I'd hope I could do one more down here before the season ends.
