I think it would be a great idea if M/S adds a Radio service...
I think the benefits outweigh the costs involved.
Benefits:
1) Forecasts and warnings can go mobile without ringing up on a cell phone
2) No power is required to receive forecasts and warnings on end user side.
3) Less traffic towards website (less bandwidth consumption for web server costs)
4) Could integrate with people that report current conditions to M/S (more up to date warnings and more accurate forecasts)
5) Once set up fully could cover the coasts and all land areas ( that means you can get all important info about the weather wherever you are)
6) and many more that I cant think about atm
Costs:
1) Could cost allot to set up (but government funding could reduce this considerably)
2) Frequency issues
3) Importing radio products ect
I would very much like to you to comment on what you think about this... because it definitely has potential to save lives.
Please comment as you cast your vote.
M/S could you comment on what what the company's thinking of this idea...
Regards
Tim

yes, yes, yes
and as a addition, they should put codes at the beginning of the broadcast, so that we can create recievers that turn on when the code is recieved

Weather radio in USA is cool but I can't see the need for it in NZ. No body would listen to it!
The public value of NOAA weather radio in USA is urgent weather warnings such as a tornadoes.

Re: Poll: Metservice Radio Service:
Agree with you NZstorm and also we don't have the population to sustain such a service I believe or the extremes of weather. What would happen to the service 24/7 or would it just be during severe weather?
If forecasts were constantly provided and updated that could be one bonus perhaps.

dont think of it as weather radio, more than a severe weather warning and civil defence station.

Re: Poll: Metservice Radio Service:
In USA it runs continuously with obs/forecasts but nearly all users would have it turned off and on alarm mode. If there is a warning in your county it activates. Interestingly I read on stormtrack today that a stormchaser had his NOAA weather radio come on with a warning, but it was for residents of the nearby Oklahoma town to evacuate because of a grass fire! nothing to do with a storm.

Better to use the likes of ZB when the need arises.dont think of it as weather radio, more than a severe weather warning and civil defence station
