Yes a thunderstorm or two off the coast there by the looks, rain has just started here with by the looks a completley separate rain band to the heavy showers in South Canterbury.
That would mark the southerly so maybe MS were right on the gun with the low risk they put up today for us, we will see.
Cheers

Yes Jason i picked up on that too. 9pm radar shows it quite impressively with heavy more widespread rain starting to become apparant. Had a few light showers for the past hour here but nothing to speak off at the moment. Maybe some heavy brief rain with this 18hour or system

I want it to snow down to sea level in Dunedin. We're shifting to Wellington in a month and there won't be any snow in my future for a long time.

I want to make the most of it while I still can.

Was a decent dusting of snow down to around 1000-1100m on the Takitimu Mountain range about 70-80km north of here. Should look more impressive after this weekend.

Steady Heavy rain has been falling for almost an hour and a half now with 7.2mm recorded so far falling at around 4.5mm/h. Rural forecast says "periods of rain some heavy and possibly thundery" Still have the main rain band to hit us overnight and tomorrow morning yet. This one on us formed out of no where. Quite interesting. Maybe a taste of the bizarre weather that we may have this coming weekend. I went for a drive into town and back half hour ago and already some gutters really overflowing with the leaves blocking them.

It didnt form out of nowhere Mark, the low just split into two and instead of weakening both were around 997-999hpa.
I think the clouds were also abit more convectivly active which allowed for more precipitation than expected from this low system.
I did notice some CB type clouds to the south of Banks Peninnsula this afternoon, not sure whether there was a thunderstorm but most of the clouds today did have a slight unstable look to them.
That will be a problem with this coming system is the combination of leaves clogging up gutters and leading to surface flooding in some streets, weather models still show alot of rain coming.

The approaching "old man Southerly" is a repeat of around May 10th, 06 when a cold front brought sleet to Christchurch and thick snow to the Canterbury foothills. Certainly over the last few weeks the weather systems moving up from the poles have become increasingly colder and stronger with harder frosts in the preceeding days lowering the trend temperatures on the drive towards winter.

It looks as if the ski season could start early, Mount Hutt already has a base of 45 cm (unusual for this early), and that was before this evenings snowfall above 700m. If freezing levels remain low enough and with regular Southerlies, no snow making will be needed this season!

Its been very interesting here this morning with a sunny start to the day, watched the line of clouds coming in around 10am from the west and some interesting forms of CU being sheared over.
Wind is N-NE at the moment with around 13C only breezy though, and the dew on the decks hasnt gone away yet either.
Cheers

So far 23mm from this system, and the radar quite impressive still with heavy falls for this morning one would think. Only isolated showers from about 3am but the radar is coming back towards coastal CHCH areas so maybe a pick up soon hopefully.

Up to 33mm since 10pm last night now. With a break between 3am-6am. Rain has been persistent since 7am again with some heavy falls. Surface flooding in parts of the city, avon and heathcote running high in some areas. SOme roads have surface water whole way across. Maybe another 10mm or so before this one is over with.

Yes. steady rain here overnight and this morning. Some substantial showers this afternoon but clearing away from late afternoon. Skies looking wintery unstable though.
Temperatures around the 7.5C mark, lifting to 8.2C before sunset, now slipping away as the clear skies take over.
Should dip below zero tonight. :yum:
