After the Big Fizzer down here last weekend, when I saw tonight's forecast on TV3, my first thought was something along these lines:

Still looks like a brief icy blast for NZ tomorrow, but coldest air should push out to the east - I haven't heard snow being forecast for the Chatham Islands for a long time. (though sleet is undoubtedly more common)

I think we will see a dry southerly change here tomorrow with the excpetion of on very brief shower or drizzle that doesnt even make the ground wet. Chance of some heavy rain for Northern and Western regions later in the week. May turn southerly at the end of next week with heavier rain for eastern south island areas. Long way out i know

Yeah i don't think it will amount to much.. maybe few showers, bit of hail.. very cold change though but very brief.

An impressive pool of Cb cloud with the very cold air out to the east of the SI.

14C here feels warm after recent chilly weather.

Wind has gone from W-SW to a fresh gusty Southerly now, i noticed the clouds moved in from the S-SE direction instead of the normal SW direction route they take.
Will this mean things offshore will push more onshore, also heaps of scatterd CU about now and looks like a shower coming to the south.
Only managed 9C today back to 7C now as the sun peeps in and out.

After a glorious, blue sky morning it's just started to turn here in inland Canters... strangely - the cold wind seems to be coming from the south but the clouds are skidding across from the direction of the Alps.. why is this?

Hmm doesnt look like anything is going to eventuate from this blast, would have thought atleast a brief belt of showers.
Just dry with lower cloud drifting over and a cold fresh gusty southerly.
I look forward to the warmer spell next week .

Wow - what a morning for netball. Gorgeous sunshine with little wind. Right up til the start of the last round (start time 1.25pm). Fresh raw southerlies, and then a good shower while on way home at 2.45pm. Very cold, but not a lot of moisture. We still have patches of snow in our shady areas from last weekend, and had the best frost of the week this morning. As I check out the window, we have a little moisture falling and dark grey clouds.

Darkening in central Chch but still dry. Obs and radar suggest light shower activity over BP, with probable snow at higher levels. (4C at LeBons at 3pm) But if you want snow to low levels, probably best to fly to the Chathams. (not exactly any real higher country there - highest point just short of 300m asl)

All gone by 10am when I passed Halswell. Nothing fresh (still a few old patches) on Mt Herbert and neighbours, but light dustings visible on shady slopes on Akaroa side of harbour above about 400m.

I was having a wee break at Lake Tekapo on Saturday and thought you might like to see this picture I took looking to the South as the front moved in, also the corresponding SAT picture from approximately the same time from landcare research.
