West Coast thunderstorm watch... Tues 21 July
Thought I'd start up a thread so anyone who is seeing/hearing predicted storms on West Coast can let us know where/when so I can rush out to look...

Certainly looks like these thunderstorms are spilling right over accross the plains. Most unusual pattern!

Re: West Coast thunderstorm watch... Tues 21 July
I haven't seen the flashes yet, but will look soon.
Seems to be spilling over quite nicely, and have had two decent sporadic showers in the last couple of hours in Christchurch.
Checked the radar and the storm is not far off, i wouldn't be surprised if jase can hear thunder now.

Looks to have been a decent thunderstorm over coastal North Otago this evening. A bit unseasonable! Very cold upper air and quite a strong mid level trough currently crossing Otago coupled with a surface trough (wind change).

Re: West Coast thunderstorm watch... Tues 21 July
Its insane here in South Taranaki at the mo....
Lightning going off every few seconds, lots of big flashes, loud thunder.
Very blustery winds, and short HEAVY intense downpours!!
Wow... hailing now... big cloud burst!
Edit: Deathly quiet and calm now.... I guess the front has moved on?
Edit: Incredible.... it was full noise here for about 1 hour and then it just stopped, like someone flicked a switch!
Man, I love this region - we get some hard case weather.

Re: West Coast thunderstorm watch... Tues 21 July
Dear mother on the west coast (Dunollie Runanga) popped me a quick email before she went offline saying the rain was blowing horizontal & was waiting for the roof to lift off the house.. shes been through all the big supercells in SEQueensland over the last 15 years but this blow is one of the few that have worried her.
Havent heard from her yet but I know shes safe.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch
This watch affects people in the following weather forecast districts:
Waitomo
Taranaki
A line of thunderstorms is currently moving through the South Taranaki area with heavy rainfall and hail of 10 to 15mm. There has been some damage near Opunake either from strong wind gusts or a small tornado. The area for potential strong winds is moving northward and should clear central Taranaki in the next hour and possibly affect areas further north in the next few hours.

Yeah that was a pearler indeed.. about 2am woke the me & the missus up who just cowered under the duvet the sook while we got blasted by very gusty winds, heavy rain and some small hail. Believe I did hear 1 clap of thunder and as quick as it happened it was all over red rover.

Yes, a bit of a rogue thunderstorm over Auckland early this morning. I don't think we have had much real heavy rain this winter but it did get very heavy for a short while in that storm.
