So what would be the prevailling wind conditions for most of NZ during the winter months, is it more SW to SE? I know you'd get a lot of local variations especially on or close to the Southern Alps though.;)
SW usually north of Taranaki,(sometimes NE in northern places)Westerly in central areas sometimes SE,Wellington NW or S,Westcoast Northerlies for rain, eastcoast SI NE or SSW (can vary) and southland WSW.

Thanks for those explanations spwill and Michael and thanks for that link Rwood, but either it doesn't like foriegners accessing its data or its having a slow day because its constantly timing out. I seem to remember looking at a similar thing a while back for weather data for the Nelson region, its definitely very comprehensive.

Well, this can't be good...been warm and dry for a while now and just glancing at the ats site...one of the more depressing forecasts I've seen in a while, 12 days of exactly the same thing, warm and dry. This thread might need to extend into mid-August, methinks. I can't imagine this being good for all that stuff that needs water...

...not to mention that it's terribly boring. :o
