Re: General August Weather
Winter ain't over yet though - North Islanders may be in for cold shock later in the week.
Apparently most of the South Island has been about 2°C above normal so far this month.

Re: General August Weather
August is usually a reliable month for snowfall over NZ but cold air from the south continues to be blocked. The Southerly over the NI later next week will have temps near the average.
I am heading up to the Tropics today, the warm sunshine will be nice.

Re: General August Weather
Quite an interesting Misty very light drizzly night last night, my deck is actually damp facing the NW.
Patchy rain started under an hour ago moving down from the North by the looks of the radar, off and on type stuff really.

Re: General August Weather
Rain let up around before noon here in Westport and since has been very muggy. No blue sky to be seen, one or two brief showers coming through and sitting on 16 degrees with no wind. Feels more like 20 though! According to the forecast there should be rain with heavy falls. Maybe a burst later on today. Only 2mm since early this morning.

Re: General August Weather
Mild and parly cloudy here in Upper Hutt ..just a mm or two early this morning ..max today so 20.4c (2nd day in a row)
I purchased a MASONS HYGROMETER from Zeal in London recently complete with old fashioned rel hum tables! Shows 50% at the moment .. A rapid drop in the past few hours from mid 80's at 1000hrs. However my marine screen does need a bit of a paint I must admit! Current 7min 300km radar shows patchy rain heading our way for later in the day. PPP falling steeply... sitting on 1005mb at 1410hrs

Was a gorgeous morning up here, got up to 20.8 degrees, the sun was out, the grass was growing.... it's taken a big turn for the bad now though, some very heavy looking clouds overhead.

Re: General August Weather
Must admit that was indeed rather nice to watch from up top here, had a very troppo look to it but alas had to go out to a 'do' in Hunua where it persistently rained the whole time, yet on the travel home once through the gorge and into Papakura & south, not a drop fell.

Re: General August Weather
Unfortunately seems to be a worldwide pattern change with the seasons back to "normal weather" ie storm season started in northern hemisphere, fires in california, drought in Australia and Persistant SW winds seem to be digging in here.

Re: General August Weather
yes, exactly what I thought, a very summery tropical look (with little glaciation...not much cold pool evident thats for sure)ust admit that was indeed rather nice to watch from up top here, had a very troppo look to it
I guess it was a low of sub tropical origin afterall, and the temp was 16 to 17C and dew point around 15C
Re: General August Weather

Re: General August Weather
Upper air was a little bit cold though with 500mb temp -20C, 850mb 6C. The cloud tops were 4500m, temp -15C.guess it was a low of sub tropical origin afterall, and the temp was 16 to 17C and dew point around 15C
We were lacking an upper short wave to take the cloud tops higher for thunder.

Re: General August Weather
Was in Christchurch on Saturday and most of Sunday for my nana's 80th, I have to say I was disappointed at the weather
Not cold but just a bit foggy and grey, a bit of rain. Ah well you can't pick the weather, had a good time and really liked Christchurch.

Re: General August Weather
Wow that front moving through South Canterbury has got some punch at the moment , dont think ive seen red on the radar in ages.
Maybe theres some sleet mixed in there, wouldnt rule it out as fronts can take us by surprise especailly during August.
