3:50 am
been woken up by torrenttial rain, at 6mm per minute!
40mm since it started at midnight
28mm in the last 50 minutes!
40mm in 4 hours total
eased off a bit now.....
also been a big pressure drop too!
looking at other online statations in the area, no one else is getting this,,,,this heavy, but maybe what we are getting is still heading east (we are further west)

one thing that bugs me:
the sat pic has shown all day, and the rain radar this evening confirms it, the original low center is crossing the southern end of the kaipara harbour this evening, and yet met service hve been saying all day it will cross the NI just to the south of auckland....
errr....
i see a new low forming off the hawkes bay/wairapa coast......i.e the low/trough doesnt like to cross the ranges of the NI,and a new low forms in the lee of the ranges instead....i.e does a bunny hop

The wet weather seems to have missed Christchurch until this evening. (light rain has now arrived) Yesterday's radar showed afternoon rain getting up into South Canterbury and later I think as far as about Ashburton, but there's been virtually nothing around Christchurch and Banks Peninsula until this evening; only some light drizzle from about midafteroon.

Interesting, Tony as I was observing from Southbridge, about the same time,Mammatus cloud forms moving across. Light southerly there but no sign or indication of anything ... "thundery" . It was also very gloomy and non very interesting. There were spots of rain on the windsceen home from the cloud 'Filling in" . I heard no Sfrerics.

My barometer got down as low as 986 yesterday afternoon (I'm pretty close to there the low centre would have crossed) I'll check it's calibration today if I can.Manukau heads observer wrote:one thing that bugs me:

Southbridge is quite a way from Amberley
Only 2 perhaps 3 claps, they were quite a long way away just a distant low rumble, and definitely to the west/northwest, so I am guessing it was on the hill country. And there was a definite shower with it.

20 to 30 knots gusting 42 knots here
and I would take 10 knots off that for places further inland, like where you are michael, in a southerly
(waiuku is getting gusts to 25 to 30 knots)http://www.tokaanuskihire.co.nz/waiuku/waiuku.htm
still along way to go to a decent southerly...
have recorded 45 knot average gusting 68 knots in a southerly here in the past a few times!
