Thunderstorms Possible, Central North Island, 18th November

Unread post by Tornado Tim »

Its seems that cold front is quite active atm, with heaps of lightning strikes according to the WWLN Network.
Some thunderstorms it seems have even developed across the warm front too, although more isolated.
Anyway M/s have issued a high risk for tomorrow.
Lets see what happens.

We need some warming today. The convective temperature for thunderstorms is atleast 21C. I'm thinking a likely spot for thunderstorm development today is over the inland North Island later this afternoon. As clouds clear, surface heating will destablise the moist airmass ahead of a southerly. But there is a big question mark over whether the high cloud will clear out in a timely matter. So its wait and see.

Yes, like to see fresh development line much closer to NI west to have confidence in getting a frontal storm here , perhaps some land heating today will trigger some fresh development.

Overcast 20C, dewpoint 16C, frontal showers in our west.

Well - about the best I can do for today, some nice cloud shots - still it was a great morning and will post a link to some nice vid footage of moving sands and the wind action out over on the west coast this morning.

Well... whilst I waited patiently for the thunderstorms this morning to appear out over on the west coast and despite having the worst ever God awful headache and in general just wanting to chuck and throw up everytime the wind blew into or onto me...( go easy on me it aint no fun having brain tumours !!!! no it aint ).

Despite this... the Canty Stormchaser Guys and their of show dedication to stormchasing over the weekend just gone - was the inspiration for me anyway to just DO IT anyway... and I did!!!! so *weary yawn, excuse me*..... I didn't get a rumble, not one, nor a strike.. but, heck... it was awesome day anyway... *another, yawn* time to go... tired... long day... here's link on youtube taken this morning from the Waipapakauri off ramp, looking north at approx 07.28 am - take care.

The lighting action in that Front last night almost reached here  I think it weakened due to poorer surface conditions, GFS did weaken the instability. This afternoon the Front produced Isolated storms in the Hauraki Gulf, Coromandel, Central NorthIsland and Taranaki.
It has been a very poor month for Lightning over NZ . Aucklands storm season is more the early spring and winter and we had quite a good season this year, now waiting for the Waikato Storm season to fire up but it has been a poor start.

I think its to do with the low level moisture supply feeding the front. The available moisture weakened as the front reached NZ.
