Re: General January Weather
I notice the auto weather stations on the South Island's West Coast are reporting a heat wave!
Hokitika peaked at 26C around midday, the wind has since swung from a light easterly to a seabreeze.
Westport peaked at a mighty 29C even after the seabreeze had arrived.
Nelson (not West Coast I know), has had 28C with a gusty east to southeast wind.

Yes, I see the entire West Coast hit the high 20's today, with temps up to 9C above normal for Jan, although technically they would have to sustain max-temps of 5C above normal for several days to constitute a 'heat-wave'.Area51 wrote:I notice the auto weather stations on the South Island's West Coast are reporting a heat wave!

I was also a little curious as to where yesterday's Akld TV-temp of 29C was taken and it appears it must've been from Whangaparaoa with 28.6C (Akld Aero was 27.8C, Whenuapai Aero 27.9C and Akld Uni's Ardmore site showed 27.4C).

Re: General January Weather
Fairly steady rain here now - 13.5mm to 9am (MTD 45.0mm), although I see Charle's Onetangi site, just 4.5 km to the east, had 44mm overnight to 9am, but they can often cop more out that way than we do.

Re: General January Weather
Here's NIWA's preliminary January 2010 Climate Summary.
National average temp was 0.4C below the long-term January average. Highest daily T-max was 34.3°C recorded at Blenheim on the 1st and Westport recorded its highest ever Jan temp of 28.5C on the 20th since records began in 1937.
Also some pretty high rainfalls at the end of Jan in the central and eastern North Island. And of the main centres, Tauranga, Hamilton and Wellington had well over twice their normal rainfall...

Re: General January Weather
Interesting to see 39mm fell at Alexandra on the 21 from thunderstorm activity, January average for Alexandra is 29mm. Cromwell getting 48mm from that storm. Was an interesting month for thunderstorms.

Re: General January Weather
Also I was surprised to see from that brief heavy rain early morning 1st Feb that a few homes in Howick got flooded. Didn't think it was sustained for long enough for that.
