Re: Thunder for the eastern seaboards 11/3
I thought I heard thunder at Rolleston but it was an aeroplane going over, sadly.
Looked thundery especially on it's leading edge.
Cold morning here, down to 1.7C.

Ended up with 13mm here to go with the 12mm we had yesterday. Thunder and lightning lasted close to an hour.

One of the best southerly 'busters' I have seen here in Lower Hutt. It raced up the valley with very strong wind gusts, heavy rain and thunder. It was like being in a hurricane for about 10 minutes!spwill wrote:Wellington about to get hit.

Re: Thunder for the eastern seaboards 11-12/3
The day started off sunny but cold and crisp, then a NE snuck in with CU developing to the south and SW.
Once the skies got alot blacker with a green tinge i knew something was developing, then i was hit by pea sized hail and forced to move for cover.
This was around 11:40am which quickly turned to moderate rain and a wind change to the E-SE, and i started hearing silent thunder rumbles inland.
At 12:30pm a defined line moved in from the south signaling the southerly wind change and some good steady rain to go with it.
Around 1pm i seen a faint flash out of the corner of my eye followed 5 seconds later by a loud crack of thunder overhead, i tell ya riveting stuff when i thought it was all over .
And at 4pm some very heavy rain briefly, now its clearing up.
Not to boast or anything but what did i say yesterday on here .

Crikey Paul, I am just up the road from you in Carterton....awesome S change...got some excelent pics of the front approaching us head on....it was very dark and we could actually hear the roar of the wind approaching before we felt it. Heavy rain, and v/strong wind for 15-20mins. Wish I had my Davis WX Station up, but sadly thats this weekends project!

Strongest initial gusts from a southerly quarter that I've seen in years at my property. A "stuff" report used the dreaded "m-phrase" in reporting events in Karori.

Not a very good photo, I took it quickly looking south about 10 minutes before the change arrived.Foggy wrote:any MetService guys online at the moment? Would've looked good from their view.
The other one is a 12 minute meteogram of the change going through Kaikoura AWS.
