Re: Deep Subtropical Low 12-18th May!!!
I wonder if it will stay intact all the way to the auckland area.......hummmm
possibly not due to the land quickly cooling down at night now
going to look for lightning now that you guys have seen some!
yup, seen some...not all that frequent...not like the first lot of CB's that were off the west coast on saturday night

Re: Deep Subtropical Low 12-18th May!!!
the footage of the damage from the logs in the Tasman area looked bad....real flash flood stuff alright!
I was just going to suggest that the kerikeri station needs to be pull in the ranging for his boltec for storms to his south, as it was plotting over the manukau instead of kaipara harbour, but I see his actively doing that now
http://www.kerikeriweather.co.nz/wxlightning.php
(the Brynderwyn ranges (or ranges to the NW) migth be causing a weaker signal
I think the thunderstorm warning is more based around the heavy rain...and total rain...due to the slow movement south...as the warning criteria, rather than amount of lightning strikes (which is only every minute or 2)
this kaipara CB has a huge blown off to the SSW anvil, visible on the sat image!

Yes after TV3 siad that the lightning was in the Brynderwyn area I started making adjustments, for anyone else wanting to make adjustments - there is NO activity around my place.

Yes, we can see the Northland Lightning from Auckland as we have clear skies here, looks like a nice storm up there, have seen plenty of lightning, very distant .
Photo 1, you can just see the cg strikes on the horizon

Man I wish I'd spent a few hundred more and bought a DSLR. I won't make that mistake again.
Our forecast for tomorrow night is looking good at this stage. Lets hope I have better luck then.

Yes, that storm to the north died quickly, cold land surface now, only 12C. Further storm development now would be over water and affect land areas near the coast.
Another photo of that distant storm.

Thanks Nev.Nev wrote:Hi RWood. Yes, NIWA refer to the EWS as "Nelson Aero", which, based on coordinates, is at the Tower. However, MetService also refer to their AWS (or used to) as "Nelson Airport", which appears to be at the S'ern end of the runway (not the tower). Yes, annual totals over last decade show that the MetService AWS site has consistently read lower than the EWS Tower site. Note that last Jan, the MetService screen was re-sited over grass, facing N; the previous year it was mounted on a pole, over concrete, facing W.
Hi Tim, the DSE WS (yes, Dick Smith Electronics) may have just been used as a temporary comparison, for the existing site. I'm not too sure. Maybe they were just as perplexed.

Re: Deep Subtropical Low 12-18th May!!!
Wow great shots all, looks like you guys got a great show!
DT-NZ, in your 3rd shot (17052010-02) is that a sundog or halo? I'm thinking halo but it looks like its concentrated in one point.

Can see that cloud is lower than the halo(i think) refracting making it look brighter.

Both halo and sun taken at 16:00hrs looking north - unfornately I do not have a wide angle len's and would have been able to have shown the view west over the tasman sea showing the same thing - halo and sundog.
What I have done is included a few more pics below of the original and another pic where I have adjusted the RGB output curve in the original to enhance the sundog.
Cheers, DT

My view when I got up this morning, a little mist along the ground and a nice CB lit by the rising sun. CB was probably off the north shore and was due north-east of me in Henderson
