A few claps of thunder and some visible lightning out west....yee-har!

Its also gone quite cold so i think the chances of hail are quite high.

You can see an extensive line of Cb's forming now and parts of Auckland look to be in the mix _b

We got 12mm over an hour yesterday afternoon from a slow moving cb over Henderson. It put out perhaps 4-5 lightning strikes but was mainly lots of good rain.

just an update to the storm we had yesterday
reports of paddocks white with hail, just 2km N of me...which makes that right under that very dark base of that photo I posted above :)

another update: Houses in the waiuku area had appliances blown up by the lightning

Tim S wrote:DT-NZ, in your 3rd shot (17052010-02) is that a sundog or halo? I'm thinking halo but it looks like its concentrated in one point.
Morning Tim

Both halo and sun taken at 16:00hrs looking north - unfornately I do not have a wide angle len's and would have been able to have shown the view west over the tasman sea showing the same thing - halo and sundog.

What I have done is included a few more pics below of the original and another pic where I have adjusted the RGB output curve in the original to enhance the sundog.

Cheers, DT
Ahh so it was a sundog, I've only ever seen a couple over in Perth but I'd imagine they might be a bit more common over here. Thanks for putting up the extra shots, it shows the halo and sundog really well!

Sounds as though you would benefit hugely from a wide angle lens though, although there's not many storm chasers that couldn't! storms aren't usually too kind in fitting into a 28mm lens! ;) Although being $1000+ the hardest thing I found was convincing my better half that I need to spend another grand on a 4th lens when I have 3 perfectly good ones already! speaking of which if anyone has a 2nd hand 10-20 or 10-22mm going cheap please pm me. :B

Great lot of photos in this thread everyone who posted them, great to see how the different areas of NZ faired from this event. _b
