Yes ,well I have studied todays activity and have had talked to Aaron on the 'phone, but I consider any activity to be weak.
Nice glaciations but no real ooomph out to the west/NW
3pm radar showed substantial rainfall and Tony did report a couple of rumbles of thunder from some weak sferics I did manage to pick up.
Maybe better luck Thursday

There is a story (and I believe it to be true, not an urban legend, because it was told to me by Dennis Dutton and he is pretty scrupulous about these things), that around the turn of last century a man somewhere in America was struck by lightning on the same date in two successive years! Now if thats not bad luck I dont know what is!tich wrote:Funny coincidence that there should be reports of thunderstorm activity in Canterbury today, when there were thunderstorms in the area exactly a year ago to the day, including Chch.

You can actually attach an image to your post like you would if you sent an email. Whatever image you have, save it into a file of your choice on your computer after you've edited it or whatever.
Then, when you go and do a post to this forum on the page you write your post on you'll see a thing at the bottom center of your screen saying Add an attachment, if you can't see it just scroll down a bit and it'll be there. Click on it and the screen sort of refreshes itself, click on the Browse button and pick out the picture from the particular file you saved your picture to and want to upload, click open on your file browser and then click Add Attachment which is sitting just above the preview and submit buttons on the posting page. After the page has loaded and refreshed again click Submit and your post will come up with your image. The thumbnail thing is created automatically so don't worry about that.
The image has to either be a .gif .jpeg .jpg .png .tga or it won't work. And it can't be over 128kb in size.
Alternatively you can send the picture to me and I'll put it up for you if you want, just click on my profile and my email is in there.

Poor John....shame on you Steven. lol
Here's some pics from today but they're pretty crud in terms of where I was, just shows development to the west and NW and some punchy Cu congestus to the N, I took those near my work at around 2:30 -3pm?. First picture is early Cu development near my place at 10am this morning.

I'm not either.
Timing and the way that Kay Greogory said on TV One weather tonight that it was going to be NW before the SW or Southerly
How can you get thunderstorms from a NW to a SW or southerly??
If she had said 'Strong NE then SW witha squally change", I might of would have believed her

The past few days, despite the isobars indicating a NW flow we have been getting mostly NE. The NW seems to be higher up in the atmosphere. Tomorrow will tell anyway, always have hope
But yeah, I did see the TV one forecast and note how they said it was going to be NW earlier to Southerly or South West after lunch, I wouldn't think thunderstorms would be that likely in that situation either. But, what I said first in this post still stands. Look at this:
http://www.wunderground.com/history/sta ... story.html
The isobars indicate NW, but as the obs show, NE prevailed all day.

I wouldn't rule out something in Chch this afternoon. The wind is light and variable, it's mild (about 15C), and the cloud has thickened somewhat, especially to the southwest, after sunshine earlier this morning. The Noon radar shows significant (though not really heavy) shower activity in South Canterbury. So some ingredients are there for thunderstorms, though not a noticeable northeasterly wind.03 Stormchaser wrote:

As I thought origionally a bit of a pathetic southerly change coming through today hense no thunder. Cooler though.03 Stormchaser wrote:Yeah was a fresh southerly Gusts up to 61km/h at 5pm. Had heavy rain and a 'small' shower of hail. Still there is still some heavy showers south of Ashburton
More southerlies through tomorrow but unless that NE kicks in, no thunder I'm afraid

It looks like the onshore sea - breezes will have to make a major impact for further cold surges coming up plus the timing

Similar today as it was yesterday. Lots of SW conditions to continue I think for a good week or so then some more spring type interesting weather to follow!!! . I see what you mean Micheal about how when these highs move east they go north, I can see lots of SW in store for you as the current high looks as if it'll do just that! I await the interesting comments. I think were in for an interesting end half of September. I could be wrong because it's all to do with the NE and timing but somewhere should benifit

You people are lucky when its westerly conditions,You can enjoy being outside wheres here its boring, cold cloudy and the weather cant make up its mind to be sunny or rainy and the wind is always horrific.I rather even get NE flows to a SW flow but better is N-NW then change to SE but that hardly happens here unless we were furthur north Roll on our 3 week summer whether its in January February or March .....
