Good idea - DoneJasestorm wrote:Just thought we could make a new topic so we remember the date rather than just being in general weather.
Thundery showers across several parts of the country today and more to come in many areas.
Moderaters could move previous posts even from your activity in the NI to here.

Very Nice Weather Watcher!Weather Watcher wrote:Here's a photo of the thunderstorm which formed over the Tararua ranges this afternoon...
Are you allowed to post some radar shots of the storm @ its peak intensity? Those types of things will be great for looking back at a later date.

Staying in Darfield atm, on drive into town at about 9pm saw a couple Cbs south of Christchchurch, this afternoon from work witnessed a couple cgs north of the city as well as some heavy showers towrds the airport , not allowed to take cameras into work so no photos. not surprised the airport recorded so much a little bit of surface flooding up by russly golf course on wairakei road.

Over Mt Somers and Mt Posession.. Somewhere down there seems to absorb a lot of daytime heating and releases that heat later in in the day, causing the convection John likes.Richard wrote: where is that "thunderstorm Corner" by the way

Mt Peel is another area like that too Andrew, remember driving out of the Rangitata Gorge one pitch dark evening after a weeks work up at Erewhon,we drove into this storm just below the mountain that i had no idea was even there and had the living crap scared out of me by a lightning bolt that struck somewhere nearbyAndrew Massie wrote:Over Mt Somers and Mt Posession.. Same region. I remember Tony Trewinnard mentioning some knowledge of the same at one of our meets.Richard wrote:

Convergence is the big thing with summer storms, the heating draws in the sea breeze.
The storms north of Wellington yesterday occurred within a convergence zone, southerly running into a westerly.

One of the main areas I go to when inland storms are developing over summer. Not far from home.Andrew Massie wrote:Same region. I remember Tony Trewinnard mentioning some knowledge of the same at one of our meets.Richard wrote:

Sunny north facing slopes around the Mt Peel area and more of a seabreeze as the coast is a lot closer in that area.

It is.
Ruapuna had a tornado in 2001, I think off hand, from a cell that developed in the area in a shallow depressionick scenario that was moving across the South Island at the time.
