Warmest NZ Town

Unread post by NZstorm »

TV1 weather asked people on the street, where is the warmest spot in NZ?
Everyone answered Nelson.

Answer, Mechanics Bay in central Auckland. Annual average maximum 19.5C, min 12.3C. No air frost ever recorded, but there is an average of 5 ground frosts per annum. Nelson by the way averages 38 air frosts a year and 90 ground frosts.

Also Nelson averages 2440 hrs of bright sunshine per annum, Mechanics Bay 2000hrs.

I think the best Climate in NZ is found along the coastal Bay of Plenty. It dose not catch the Southerly like Gisbourne and HawkesBay and dose not have the cool winter that Nelson gets also it's far enough North to get the high summer Dew points which = balmy nights. :D

It is actually Blenium, then Nelson, followed by Whakatane/Tuaranga and then Napier. Tekapo also ranks up there amoungst the sunniest spots in NZ. :D

You will have to check the NIWA figures for recent years.

So far this year we have recorded 1444hrs in Auckland. Compare that to Tauranga 1638hrs, Welliwood 1372hrs, and Christchurch 1408hrs.
Info from todays NZ herald. :) those figures to 19/09/04.

Of the 4 main centres, Dunedin was the warmest (I Think) in 2001 or 2002 of a maximum temperature of 36C.

This is just off the cuff, i have to console my weather diarries.

Jordan near Motueka wasn't mentioned

Jordan is in the Awatere Valley in Marlborough. Joint holder of the 42 degree record maximum. Motueka is quite possibly sunnier than Nelson city.

It was early this year, around the first week of January I think, and there was extensive discussion of it in this forum - use the search function and read all about. No, it wasnt an official reading, and it was eventually corrected downwards.
