I certainly feel for all the skifields in the South Island. Lets hope this Southerly blast delivers what they need.

6:30am, clap of thunder (my pc let me know before the thunder was heard , LOL)
and squally shower has gone through
barometer has been steady at 991 since 2am, so either the low to the se is still deepening or not moving away as fast, or the isobars are being left behind
only 9.6oC here, coldest its been since July

just had reports of flooding damage at Big Bay in last nights high tide, due to the strong westerlies and still low 990 hpa barometer and big tasman swell no doubt
about as bad as it has ever been for flooding height
quite a few trees might die from the salt!
yesterday, with a 980 baro, but a northerly wind, the tide was not quite as bad

Yesterday's baro low of 973mb compares to a reading of 964mb at Tauranga during Cyclone Giselle, April 1968.

been out and about
photos of a funnel cloud just forming (there was some rotation at the tip), but it did not last long (it hailed not long after)
photos of flooding from the big high tide (BigBay)
photos of hail shower/squal (with flaashes of lightning just after I took that too, awsome stuff)
been great!

nice stuff there brian, sounds like its all on out there.
like the funnel pre-curser, thats always neat.
Just a couple of heavy showers here in newmarket so far, although 12pm radar suggest a bit more coming.

baro been sitting on 988 most of the day now just poped up to 992 had very heavy squally showers with hail 2day saw a few funnel clouds but soon disapeared it is very ripe for tornadoes bring it on

Intersetingly the SW gales never really developed here, northland got them instead....
40 kt gusts at brynderwn last night
thats the strongest they have from the SW in a long time, western kaipara areas must have got a hammering!
