Cb cloud tops were visible from Auckland. Looks like it ended up a good evening for storms south of Hamilton.

Odd distant Rumble, but nothing significant storm wise (upper levels too warm), but getting a fantastic amount of rain though... nearing 40mmspwill wrote:Cb cloud tops were visible from Auckland. Looks like it ended up a good evening for storms south of Hamilton.

General January Weather
Heck 40mm!!!???? We are just over 10mm.
I'm amazed at how long lived this convection is. Doesn't look like letting up yet either. Classic Waikato summer stuff

Looking back, the modelling really started to point to storms on the morning 18Z run yesterday. Previous runs where very iffy.jamie wrote:Hmmm that sounding is much more unstable than previous ones.

Well DairyNZ's research farms at Newstead had 90mm apparently. That's one heck of a drop!

Re: General January Weather
51.8mm, best lot of rain falling from Convection in quite a long time.jamie wrote:24.2mm here. What was your total Tim? Probably 50?
Regarding the easterly surge, i think it had component to play in the upper fields, the sfc wind however was NW to North so I think it must have kept the surge back over the central northern Waikato.
Generally when we have an easterly surge it pushes the convection way out west, as generally the west is allot weaker in these scenarios.

Yea the line was just to the west of me, Newstead in the perfect place.jamie wrote:Well DairyNZ's research farms at Newstead had 90mm apparently. That's one heck of a drop!
The convection started flaring to west again mid evening, so I am not surprised that place got a high amount.
17.2mm at Hamilton Airport, I wonder what Ruakura got.

Re: General January Weather
Jeez it would only be 2km (if that) as the crow fly between Ruakura and Newstead. Prime example of how hit and miss summer storms are.

Yes the cool fresh SE was a big change where I was at lake Taupo, after the very warm lake breeze NW the previous evening.NZstorm wrote:Low level wind chart for 7pm last night. NW converging with a SE over southern Waikato.
