took a cruze out over to helensville to view the storm over kaipara and saw some great flashes. But was short lived as everyone noted here. I tried to get the anvil w/ mammatus as described by NZstorm but the sun angle just wouldnee cooperate.

Bit o' excitement tho, I took the arvo off the write some music at home, but then looked out the window at about 3pm and saw the anvil developing to the NW much like yesterday, Sure enough, it extended for blimmin miles.

Anyhoo, attached is 6;50pm landsat which shows very well the extent of the anvil coming from the Kaipara system. On such a clear nite, and being in the middle of nowhere (we were sumwhere by whenuapai!) the anvil was really quite sumthing.

Hey that wasn't you in a white station wagon - on foot - running back along SH16 near the Riverhead turnoff with a camera at about 5.20pm?

Saw this person and thought - 'Bet they are trying to get a picture of the anvil!'

If you are out this way again - I've done a quick map to show one of the best local vantage points. Turn up Old North Road and continue on through a couple of intersections until you are near the Gun Club.

Cheers,

G

nah sorry Graeme, wasn't me....funny tho isn't it, you realise that there are quite a few people that look up!..

Also quite a few that dont, point in case, my neighbour just thinks i'm wierd and even said to me once that he thought I had a bad neck as he could always see me standing on the deck looking up..

Wot a nonce!!!

he must be one of those "run to the water when it is receeding" types that we saw on boxing day.

I was in Hobsonville looking to the north between 6 and 7 and saw the cell. It looked as though it had split with action only coming from the more easterly part of the cell. There was plenty of c-c lightning happening every 30 seconds or so. Seemed very distant from me though as i didn't hear any thunder associated with it.

TV1 said there was a water spout seen from the Coromandel, didn't say what part, assuming the East coast. They didn't have any footage though.
Might have been the one :?:
