It's been trying to snow here, albeit in a truly sad and pathetic way, but looks to have given up now.

Just cool and grey overcast conditions at the moment in the Mackenzie.

Gee you Aucklander's are getting blue skies! :x (going by today's and yesterday's pics)

8/8 both days here. Persistant rain today has just eased to light rain or drizzle within the last hour. 11c here compared to a warm 16c in AK

Grounds very sodden, 20mm so far today, 28mm yesterday ;)

I thought the rain would arrive earlier than predicted yesterday when showers became more frequent for a time in the afternoon, but it stayed dry (though overcast with low cloud) near Akaroa this morning. A period of light drizzly rain earlier this afternoon, but nothing at present. The northeasterly is often strong and gusty, however.

W'gton is still dry after a mild night (for winter). Some signs of rain on NE & E horizons.

Just got some pics of a smallish Cb that passed over head before with the biggest raindrops I have seen!

No sh :x t but these drops were (or seemed to be i should say!) around 10mm diameter before they hit the ground. And as there were only a few of these drops they left quite visible splatter marks on the concrete....which of course i measured, roughly 60 - 70 mm diamter - now thats a crazy amount of water per drop!

anyway, below is some thunderporn :P

Mixing weather with Porn i don't know [-X :-s .
Cold overcast here today with occasional light drizzle rain like tich suggested NE rather strong at times especially this morning currentlly
35-40kmh perhpas rise to gale overnight as that rain develops and becomes more persistant.
Can hear sea from here real big roar and iam quite farr from sea.
Just to note on Thunderstorm in Aucks the other day if those who have MS calendars check the 21st of this month a thunderstorm hit Auckland and 16 strikes hit sky tower just shows that thunderstorms are common at this time of year that was in 1999 as well.
Cheers
JASON.

how did last night electrical storm compare with the ones you saw in the USA Nzstorm?
It would be unfair to compare them. Saturday night's storm was active for a short period, a good storm.

Thunderstorms in the midwest in spring are far more powerful than anything you would observe in NZ and you wouldn't consider driving into one unless you were wanting to write your car off and you are suicidal! Lots of people get killed every year in the USA (not storm chasers) by not being vigilant enough around severe weather.

An interesting feature about USA severe thunderstorms is that they often develop into an MCS (mesoscale convective system) and go all night and can still be active the next morning.

there seems to be several bands of fairly active Cb's approx 300-500km of the west coast of the NI.

Progression of this over the last 3 hours makes it look like there could be some beef in them.

7pm radar is attached.

Ricky's tracker is picking up the odd strike out that way.

Absolutely hosing down here at the mo too.... :D

Weatherzone satellite picture shows up the convection well. Some quite unstable air out there today with the 500mb temperature at -25C, surface dewpoints were 13C ealier, now 11C. Lifted index on midday sounding was -1.6. Hopefully a front comes through in this unstable air!

Thunderstorms over Auckland today, Northand and possiby as south as Hamilton, This will most likely be the last day thunder heard over the north from this recent low. Heavy rain likely in places, >25mm.

No season for Thunderstorms in Ak, some years there's more Thunderstorms in Winter, some years there's more Thunderstorms in Summer.

Overcast here with old anvil cloud, can see Cb showers out to the West.
No wind here, looks the type of day where a few hours of sun would produce good cloud build ups.

Only light rain in Chch at present, but it's been dull and wet all day. I notice the minor rain-shadow effect of Banks Peninsula this morning when there was just drizzle in the southwestern corner of the peninsula (Birdling's Flat to Gebbies Pass area), sheltered from the northeasterly, while other nearby areas were getting steady rain.

MetService is predicting low risk of 'embedded' thunderstorms in the southeast of the North Island. Yesterday that low risk was extended to the Kaikoura Coast :o , which seems unusual for a winter easterly rain system. I hope none of the Canterbury storm chasers were expecting anything further south, especially considering the drizzly nature of the rain we've been getting.

Summer like sky, but mid-winter temp. Cb's hanging around in all directions, 12c and no wind. Dry day after morning fog.

Pics later.

Mild calm day here with a few peeps of sunshine. A few very short episodes of light rain from mid/highish stratus, lower cloud only visible to the east and northeast. Still waiting for a shift to southerly.

I have feelings that Auckland doesn't, have'nt any seasons for thunderstorms, while the Waikato has less in the winter, but more in the summer...? I'm still not too sure...

I think inland areas and Eastern high ground would see more Thunderstorms in Summer.

Mostly weak Cb around Ak today, less sun, cooler and lower dewpoints.

Photo-Watched this shower develop over Penrose area this afternoon.
A very nice Cu biuld up into the back of Cb.

Today's upper air sounding for Auckland was certainly one that looked favourable for thunder with the 500mb temperature on -27C. But a general lack of upward forcing prevented anything significant developing, which is not unusual in July with the land being so cold.

As far as thunder seasons go, the Waikato and Auckland are similar with no real season but there is a peak in activity in the month of December, particularly for the Waikato.

Nice pics there.
