Heading towards a frost in Chch tonight after a sunny day. Looks like the next few days will be milder, unlike SE Australia in the grip of an icy blast on the other side of the approaching Tasman trough.

BTW has anyone else had trouble accessing the forum tonight?

weather does look a bit more interesting, coming up, well especially since the recent bout of boring weather over the last 6 weeks or so - Yawn icon.
I can't find one so this one that Michael uses quite often, will have to do

Yes, so is Steven Graham's with lightning aplenty away to the west off the South Island. Should be a good light show if flying at the present time to Australia :D
I wonder if those Cbs ,sorry CNs, have (yet again) "Destination Auckland " stamped to them ;)

Yesterday would have been the coldest winter day so far for SE Australia.
The thickness at Melbourne was 5240, possibly as cold as you think it could get at that lattitude.

All that cold air will keep the Tasman Sea unstable for a couple of days.
Thunder and hail on the way for western areas and the south of the country.

A nice day here and pleasant even though it's mostly cloudy... 15c and a faint WNW
Up to 15mm expected here tonight as the front moves through...
Is Thor going to deliver a THUNDERY THURSDAY on his day?? :-k :P
Fingers crossed anyway.

Mostly fine tomorrow and warm. Showery northwesterlies on Saturday
and then sunny spring southwesterlies from Sunday-Tuesday, but few isolated showers persist from Auckland northwards

Partly cloudy for most of the day, but the sun was very nice. Drizzling a wee bit now.

What's that free link to the MetService strike map?

Just been reading about it... didn't know TRANSPOWER set it up!
Anyway it's the most sophisticated in the world, the US are upgrading it to our standard.

Various trackers picking up lots of strikes off the West Coast to about North of Taumarunui :)

Thanks for the link aj

Here's where I read the article when trying to search for the jolly thing! :)
(I just realised it's quite old)
http://www.gisuser.co.nz/documents/Othe ... rticle.htm

It quotes,
"The Americans have had a detection network for about 12 years and they're presently upgrading to the same standard as in New Zealand"

So I assume it's already been upgraded as the article is old.

Still dry here, but lots of sferics on the radio

Judging by storm motion and speed, they should make landfall here at 1am

9mm of rain or showers with some thunder have cleared to fine weather now. Some warm temps across the upper North Island expected today (17-20c for Auckland & Northland and up to 17c in the Waikato)
Hopefully we get this heating to ensure tonight's return of rainfall to assist TS 8)

i see ruahpehu has had 15cm of new snow overnight, and they should get more over the next few days too
1.8m base their now

it is surprsingly warm considering the air mass started as cold air over tasmania...i guess though its originated more from NSW/queensland border, and the warm western tasman sea has helped too

The springlike weather continues here in Omarama and the Mackenzie, with dense cloud and light rain, with cool-to-warm temperatures.

What are the prospects for action weather here in the next few days? Good, or fading?

Sunny dry month here so far, and. quite mild. SE storm for this w/end in earlier prognoses? - sounds like bollocks!

I don't mind this "inaction" at all.
