Yes David - Tokoroa - flooding at some intersections - streams running 450 deep across R32, almost impassable...
MAx rate 40.1mm/hr average for an hour, and also a peak rate of 7.28mm/min or 436.7mm/hr peak rain recorded!! Already up to 92mm since 9am... Ummm - I gotta ride the bike home tonight and I think it will just ease as I leave - HAHA! It was just a slightly damp road this morning at 7:30am... 12.4mm yesterday.
I don't think the farmers enjoy such a dowsing as it just runs right off and causes damage...
Somehow my max gust is errant today.. in the profile below...
Temp of 16.5 with DP of 15.7ºC

WOW check out that 3pm radar image. Very visable low.
Had to drive to the airport at 2pm and saw alot of lightning on the way there with a few overflowing storm drains on the way out there.
Looks dark out to the north west again.

Not only red but quite a bit of purple and even some white in the 4pm radar. BOP must be getting drenched right now.

power back here now
wow, that was the most exciting weather here for a ages
reall good squall, with that low center going right over us (and the wind went from NE right around to the SW after the low passed....then a cloud line moved over from the NE and that was the boundary back to the NE wind again!

Re: Wet and unstable, NI, Apr 13-18
well, i made dargaville my target, and set out. i made it to warkworth were it was just pouring down, strong winds blowing trees around too. i made it to a library to check weather maps (note to self: invest in a mobile internet connection), and saw a blob of lightning on the lightning strike map covering the top of northland, so set destination for whangarei and hoped for the best.
30km out of whanga, i start to see blue sky
i should have stuck with dargaville from the sounds of it.
not once did i see a single flash of lightning... probably something to do with me being on the east coast rather than west as i had planned. plenty of massive rain and strong winds tho, so not a bad day. unfortunately i wasnt fast enough to get back to auckland before the storm had moved on..
i did, however, get to see the anvil of the big Cb that hammered northern northland while on my way back - that sucker was humongous!

Tauranga getting pounded! 45mm rain in the last hour! My max of 11mm in one hour doesn't seem so heavy after all...

Good on you people up north enjoying the lightning and thunder
Southerly through here was so boring, just the usual low stratus and the associated boring temperature drop.
Sad to hear about the horse and it's rider being struck by lightning

I was lucky enough to be lunching in Takapuna from 1-3pm today when the storm passed through. The rain was at times spectacularly heavy, and the thunder/lightning show would have to be one of the most sustained I've seen for a long time. A real treat.

Just been trying to fix those errors... had to correct compounding mistakes and logfile errors- no max was about 55kms...Ryan Thomas wrote:160k/mh Wind Gst TokWW? that right?

Re: Wet and unstable, NI, Apr 13-18
oh no, terrible tradedy at OPC, Turangi....7 people drowned in a flash flood...
(makes you wonder why though experienced staff did not realise the danger when its raining very heavy after a prolonged dry spell ?)
a 2nd wave of heavy rain is going to move down from north today, and maybe more thunderstorms !

Re: Wet and unstable, NI, Apr 13-18
Yes Terrible news this morning about the drownings.
That front over the Eastern BOP is still progged by the 12Z models to drift westward today with heavy rainfall spreading back toward Coromandel and into Waikato. These situations are a bit unpredictable though, yesterdays MCS over Northland was a bit unexpected although with such high instability values not a suprise.
NZWP midnight sounding had LI -3.7 and CAPE 945j/kg.
They are highest instability values captured by a sounding in this country for a while. Late evening when soundings are taken tends to be a stable time of the day.
Day here should start off bright with a msity morning atm. Temp 17c dp 17C.

i honestly dont see the same storms moving westward over us again... the NW flow is still very evident, and quite fast moving.
new convection this morning up north, heading this way.

Re: Wet and unstable, NI, Apr 13-18
yes, i think its a new line coming down from the north, i.e the front is going to re form over the top of the NI island, more than the fact the first front moves back west...
but the tasman low is drifting north, which will though tend to pull in what is out to the east though I guess, as that wraps around the SE quadrant of the main low center?
heavy rain just coming onto the rain radar in the far north already
very foggy here this morning...sign of more rain .....me thinks
I knew when I checked out things yesterday morning at 5am it was going to be a big day for the NI...
Met service have updated the thunderstorm watch , coromandel/BOP under the gun again

What is meant is the trough will back up. The convection will drift south down the line so the weather will come in from the north. Could be another interesting day.

Re: Wet and unstable, NI, Apr 13-18
Im picking another good day today. Kind of confused at what is actually ment to happen ( is it going to move west? or is it going to develop on land? or is it going to come off the tazzy? )
I drove down to the top of the Bobays last night to see the night time lightning shots over the waikato and BOP. actually saw more than i was expecting. Alot towards BOP way.

Re: Wet and unstable, NI, Apr 13-18
the CB that was out beyond Gt barrier island last nite also had visible lightning too
Our local school wants to know if they should cancel an outdoor assemly at 1:30pm....
if we get some sunshine this morning after the fog lifts, there could be heavy showers developing as early as then?
just a call from the wife...one of the students drowned was a daughter of one of the teachers from Waiuku College

I heard on the radio this morning (can't verify the figure, but I'm sure someone out there can) that the cumecs for the river(stream) went from 0.5 to 16 in the space of 1/2 and hour!

That is A LOT of water...a flash flood, indeed....
