Re: Railfans
Interesting cab layout. Can't see the braking system. Not push button like the recabbed Dgs?

Re: Railfans
Yes the Brakes are on the right, the throttles on the left.
The delays in starting them was lack of the special oil? They have it now, apparently the engines blow loads of white smoke so I'm presuming it is a special oil for running them in?
Talk of the engines being German made in the Volkswagon factory?
I guess more will be revealed in time.

Re: Railfans
First run blow in.. man youve outdone yourself with those shots, kudos to whoever took them. Im starting to like the DL's a little bit, the wabco brake (red handle) we had on the left with the dynamic brake lever and throttle on the right with the low noise/full blast airhorn, forward reverse lever in the middle, will try find a pic.

Re: Railfans
Not 100% sure on the original source... came to me via many hands in Kiwirail. Possibly Graeme Hudson the senior rail safety advisor at NZTA. I agree they are great shots. Sadly my source had deleted the ones in the cab etc.Dale Small wrote:man youve outdone yourself with those shots, kudos to whoever took them.

Re: Railfans
Thank goodness I don't drive trains any more.
Mind you these locos probably wouldn't come to the South Island anyway.
I would be too used to the 26L system with the brake handles to the left of me, rather than operating a silly little T-bar lever to the right of me. Probably mistake that for the throttle
Imagine the consequenses as well with rough train handling and possiblity of derailments from surges, depending on what sort of train it was?

Re: Railfans
Yes the controls like the brakes looked real in the old locos, big cylinders and handles, the horizontal throttle on the panel looked decent with the notches etc.(even the old 1950s control panels looked better).

Re: Railfans
Have to agree with you John.. we had the 26L on the red T bar to the left, throttle to the right.. those were the aussie DL's (Clyde Eng build).. shouldnt be too much of a transition.

Re: Railfans
I notice also that the DLs are fitted with "Bull-hooks" or Alliance couplers as we called them. No good with the old NZR standard buffer and hook which the nowdays wagons still have ie UKs etc?
So they must be going to be used on unit trains, eg Coal or milk trains whatever??

Re: Railfans
Really, really stupid of me the last couple of days but I have had other things on my mind. The NIMT is shut down from Pukke northwards for the electrification project.. so here in Paerata, we have ballast machines, track tampers, some other crazy ass machine along with resleepering machines ( dont know why you dont go concrete sleepers).. the infamous crossing here is deactivated & its a hive of activity.. 2 ballast trains with a DC at 1 end and a DX at the other.. working wrong line, some other freaked out train dumping a lot of stuff over the side worked by another DC... the ballast spreaders, ill do my best to head down there sometime tomorrow and grab a few pics. All northbound trains terminate at Pukekohe & freight is transferred to truck.. so down at the station earlier as I went to Bunnings.. it is just a monstrous stack of sea containers waiting to be freighted... mad mad stuff.

Cutting a long story short, im based in Runanga on the west coast for a little while, previous tenants of mums house had to relocated after the pike river thing so im here to tidy the place up ready to put on the market.. my first trip on the TranzAlpine but certainly wont be my last, what an amazing journey.
Whack some more up later once I learn how to resize everything on this lappy.. like driving a new car!

Re: Railfans
Did he let you have a drive? at least turn the throttle around
Actually the DX stand alone class doesnt exist now,All rebuilt new engines and traction motors etc since(DXB C &R)you must have been in a DXC though is derived from the DX class

Re: Railfans
Shame about the "TranzCoastal" train that runs between Christchurch and Picton. I can't understand why the Pike River Mine disaster and the Feb 22nd ChCH Earthquake has to do with it's running.
Wouldn't it be something to do with lack of patronage over the non-busy seasons and using 'tragedy' as a reason to stop running the service because of tough financial times?
Trains must be very expensive things to run. The old day day's you could understand it's losses, but these days maybe they need an injection from something like the Otago Excursion Trust or some eccentric billionaire to run these services.
