Re: Potential low level snow Mon 13th April
"This watch is for the possibility of significant snowfalls through to Tuesday morning over remaining parts of Fiordland and Otago not covered by the warning. Note, snowfalls are also likely about parts of Banks Peninsula and the Canterbury Plains above 300 metres, although amounts are not expected to reach warning criteria in these areas."

I'm no expert on Sth Island weather but 1 degree in Queenstown at 1pm in mid-April surely must be unheard of!

Re: Potential low level snow Mon 13th April
Interesting evening ahead. Snow to 200m for me in canterbury. Looks to be a decent amount of moisture around in inland canterbury too. I noticed no one forecast snow below 200m in the deep south yet snow has been reported as low as 50msl. As usual M/S were over conservative. They have put an extra update out because they got caught with there pants down Again. Farmers surely wont be happy. I think they would prefer to see a report slighty over the top and it doesnt happen rather than get caught out.

Cloudy tomorrow with wintry showers; snow flurries to low levels; some hail. Fresh very cold southwesterlies.

Re: Potential low level snow Mon 13th April
Had snow showers around midday here and moderate sized hail and a couple rumbles just now. Snow/hail settled at around 300m asl and will surely drop later in the day as the ground gets colder or we get more hail.
Was lots of lightning around 5am apparently but I was out to it.

-6C at 850hpa generally means snow right down to sea-level so it would be interesting to hear why the Metservice decided to go with 200m asl for Southland...

Potential low level snow Mon 13th April
Why is one news reporting the Christchurch dodged it? They are saying the city missed the expected snow fall.
I don't recall there being a forecast saying snow (snow being snow not just hail or sleety showers) in Christchurch itself.

Re: Potential low level snow Mon 13th April
Im guessing they take the Radar offline when these events happen and it happens all the time and you have to think that there 2 biggest rivals are in Canterbury and the radar is a very valuable tool to get out up to date forecasts
I dont think they have to provide up to date radar images by law do they? if at all?

Re: Potential low level snow Mon 13th April
That's something new. MS has been the other way since June 2006 after they were caned by every man and his dog for failing to foresee how widespread that snow would be.talbotm15 wrote:As usual M/S were over conservative.
There you go: MS just can't win, no matter what they forecast. They have put an extra update out because they got caught with there pants down Again.
There's a shock... Farmers not happy about something.Farmers surely wont be happy.
Nope. MS will be criticized for it, just as they will be for not doing it.I think they would prefer to see a report slighty over the top and it doesnt happen rather than get caught out.

Lol, that’s really interesting Melja – how does the Southland radar working all day where all the action has been fit into your theory though?

Re: Potential low level snow Mon 13th April
Just been speaking with a MetService forecaster in Kelburn who said they are also frustrated with the Canty radar going down and MetService have someone going to Chch to see what the situation is. I was similar to your way of thinking Meija but it seems legit.

Are Tony or CWU based in Southland Bradley? No there in Canterbury.Bradley wrote:Lol, that’s really interesting Melja – how does the Southland radar working all day where all the action has been fit into your theory though?
Been a nice sunny day here a bit cool and windy but a high of 14C at some point and about 70-80% of the day suuny.
No moisture at all today and a very low humidity of 40% with the cold air.
