"We basically had rain first up, the rain stopped and then suddenly Queenstown was snap frozen. All that water on the runway and the roads just turned to ice."
Interesting observation. I wonder if the ground temperature was so cold, that when the front arrived it didn't warm up the ground fast enough.

Re: General June Weather
Yes if this rain band clears witch it looks like its going to, and it clears overnight, theres a chance it could get down to -3 in the early hours probably starting around 4am onwards.. the roads will be extremely dangrous if this happens.. thankfully no work tomorrow!

Re: General June Weather
Was lovely to have had warmer weather yesterday at work in Methven, finally we had the snow on the roof of the building starting to thaw. The downpipe had been frozen solid for the previous two days. I would say the roads would be very treacherous this morning. Here in Rakaia after the rain last night we had a really good frost here (I know it's a good frost when all the windows in the bus are iced up). The emergency services siren first went off just after 6am, then again a little over an hour later and for a third time just prior to 8am. Not a good morning for those guys so far.

Re: General June Weather
Can't say I've ever seen these kind of figures forecast for Christchurch before, clearly we aren't going to get that amount but the models have been consistently throwing up huge rainfall figures the last few runs now

Re: General June Weather
I'm guessing all we need is some reasonable cold fronts in conjunction with this and the snowfields are going to get a pounding over the next 2-3 weeks?

Had the pleasure of driving up to Arthurs Pass yesterday. Remarkable amounts of snow, chains essential from just beyond Springfield over Porters Pass. Lake Lyndon totally frozen over

General June Weather
'Twas very spring like today. Warm in the afternoon. Even had some very shallow convective showers this afternoon.

Re: General June Weather
I did too, but from the other side, and I thought there'd be more snow. We didn't go any further east than Arthurs Pass village, but I expected there to be more snow about. It was well and truly frozen, so no soft playful snow, but the kids still had a great time. Signs said chains required from Otira, but there wasn't any need at all. Worst bit was actually before getting to Otira with black ice on some of the shaded corners. No signs of grit before Otira which surprised me.Razor wrote:Had the pleasure of driving up to Arthurs Pass yesterday. Re: General June Weather
Yes things were very different on the eastern side. Snow tailed off around Craigieburn/ Lake Pearson as is normal in the southerly events I guess. Lake Lyndon, Castle Hill and Cave Stream areas were an amazing sight, see pictureseinzack wrote:I did too, but from the other side, and I thought there'd be more snow.
