Re: General November Weather
An interesting low-level wave feature over the waters off NW Nelson in this mornings visible satellite imagery. It reminds me of the "morning glory" cloud in the Gulf of Carpentaria. What could be the cause? Outflow from the line of storms to the west?

Re: General November Weather
Just looking at tomorrow there are a few dynamics there for a severe cell or two across the plains, given some hints of a polar jet are present and abrupt cold upper air is crossing.
Total totals are very widespread over the country with 57 to 58 over Canterbury.
The ridging opens up in the afternoon to allow coastal light NE winds in, while it remains W-NW inland.
Potential for 20+mm hail and squally winds.

Re: General November Weather
Yes, the odds are likely for thunderstorm activity across the plains and around here, tomorrow, but whether a separate topic is required for this as thunderstorm activity across Aotearoa/New Zealand is quite ripe at the moment with lots of isolated thunderstorms happening, some with tornado events and unlikely incidents like the poor joker who's ute got struck by lightning near Hokitika.

Re: General November Weather
Interesting day here weather wise. No thunder heard or lightning observed but today was an interesting day cloud wise with wind differences from between SW to West to SE winds later this afternoon forming interesting cloud forms. It did rain eventually, later this evening with 0.6mm to 10pm with more later. Some photos from today.

Re: General November Weather
Between about 12.30 and 2pm this afternoon I was working on plant in effectively a lean to in Taupo. Had 2 hail & 1 heavy rain showers come through causing me to cease, secure the equipment shelter & take refuge in my vehicle. No thunder, but man that wind was cold, cut ya in half material.

Re: General November Weather
Interesting day weather wise here today as compared to yesterday with interesting cloud forms today as well as yesterday.
Lots of Cu congestus forms today but weakening away during the afternoon.
Interesting this evening as I was sitting in my couch in my room after having dinner, relaxing whilst doing the crossword in the paper, I noticed some dark clouds to the south. not taking much notice, and dozing off, I heard one or two drops on the roof. Not expecting much as there was no thunderstorm watch for South Canterbury on the MS Website, I wasn't alerted to such an event happening.
The few spots got much more numerous, coming onto rain and then the rain became heavier and heavier. I woke up and then there was a flash of lightning within the cloud, what people call sheet lighting with a great roll of thunder. Wow, I wasn't expecting this. I recorded 6mm of rain in 10 minutes from the shower before easing off. Another rumble of thunder was heard about 5 minutes after the first one I heard. Later I saw some lightning off shore to the east of here. Today's maximum was 20.2C with a total of 8mm of rain for today.

Re: General November Weather
Becoming fine overnight but clouding up this morning and clouding more so during the afternoon with moderate winds from betwixt the south and east blowing this afternoon. Not very interesting here as compared to further north. Some rumbles of thunder were heard around the TC area about a quarter to four this afternoon. Grey skies and clagg for the rest of the day and evening with winds dropping and becoming calm with some drizzle resulting in 1.9mm for today until 10pm.
Cool temperatures this evening with today's maximum of 16.5C reached late this morning.

Re: General November Weather
Rain has been moderate to steady most of the day in the city, around 18-20mm so far, I do see the heavy band is moving back down from the north now so more to come.
Both Wednesday and Friday bring thunderstorm chances as Mike suggested yesterday, what a year for storms so far right across the country.

Re: General November Weather
Bugger all storms in Geraldine this year with lots of days with clagg occurring lots of times there, Jason.!
This month making up for it.Interesting to see how December fears?
..anyway, rain overnight easing away this morning turning to drizzly showers. 27.2mm for today, however remaining overcast and claggy for the rest of the day into the evening, with light SE winds and becoming calm this evening.
Had to light the fire this evening with today's maximum temperature only reaching 11.4C

Re: General November Weather
Some storms appear to be developing along the Canterbury foothills. Looks like rain in chch at the moment which is a shame.
