Rain, heavy at times about the hills south of Timaru, but just scattered falls north of Rangiora. Rain easing during the afternoon and skies clearing in the north by evening. Southeasterlies, strong in exposed places south of Ashburton, turning northwest in the north during the afternoon.

Doesn't sound too promising....
Yeah but thats interesting when them saying rain easing tomorrow evening when its stopped here a day before. All the rain on the radar is now around Ashburton and southwards. Could be lucky.

The NZWP 00Z sounding shows t/cu tops to 5000m is what gave our rainfall a boost today. In Penrose where I was working today we had some very heavy showers late am/early pm amoungst the constant rain.

basicly in the clouds here this evening now
very murky
still on 20.1C DP

I would say another cold front will develop to clear out this warm and moist air mass yet
could be some thunder on the cards tomorrow?

Somewhat cooler now on 14C with very light drizzly stuff now and then, and a strong easterly which has just picked up as of the last 30 minutes.
Averaging 30kmh gusting 45kmh at the moment.
Cheers

Sth Waikato was featuring in most of the forecasts on Thursday - esp the eastern hills, well we had a quiet night with rain starting at 3am with light nor-easters, and 16mm by 9am. It slowly gathered pace, and received a further 61mm by 5pm. Total then to date now 20:45 is 79.3mm. Max T was 21.2ºC with DP depression around 2ºC all day, same now.

Max gust was 52km/hr at 3pm in a quieter rain spell which started just at a bump in the baro. Has levelled out again at 1005hPa. Winds were NW ever since the bump, but reducing now. Skies are clearing from the west. Should be very muggy again tomorrow if the sun comes out...

Winds gusting to 50km/h. Windchill at -1 with that gust. Around 15 degrees at the moment. Looks like some new development threatening the Christchurch City region. Hopefully that stays clear or if it is going to rain it poors. Mainly light at the moment however. Currently it is dry and windy.

Big difference in rainfall between chch and rangiora at only 30kms away, we have had 54mm so far and its starting to come down good again in the last hour with the wind now picking up so maybe the low is going to drop more rain on the area to the north of chch than metservice thinks :?:

Had 42mm between 8am and 1pm so not bad going for this area.

Yeah you have. Only about 20mm in my area and peaking to around 30mm tops in some suburbs. Just been for a drive and very heavy drizzle is sweeping horizontally out there now. Especially in the city centre!

Light rain here now just about steady, amazing contrasts in rain depth just kilometres away.
Could well be some big totals overnight.
Edit. 5 minutes later and its heavy rain on the roof \:D/ .
Cheers

Look at this, You can see the cloud band bringing the heavy rain to the SI.
Quality of the pic is not that good on here due to shrinkage and filesize.

Ended up with 38mm out of that system here - MTD 73mm (Jan only 23mm), so very happy. :D

Re the North Island, not too sure which set of figures below to believe, so take your pick...
Rain set to get blown away
4:00AM Saturday Feb 21, 2009 - NZ Herald
...MetService heavy rain warnings proved well-founded yesterday. Many places were drenched, including Wellington - where 70mm of rain fell - while those in Lower Hutt had to be quick to avoid the puddles after a rainfall of 83mm... The wettest place yesterday was the Taranaki Regional Council site on the visitor's centre in North Egmont, where 303mm of rain fell, while Inglewood had 112mm of rain... In Auckland, rainfall of 37mm soaked some people's hopes of a fine night out...

Taranaki bears brunt of bad weather
Saturday, 21 February 2009 - Taranaki Daily News
...While the whole country was drenched, Taranaki got the heaviest dumping with 301mm at North Egmont, 174mm at Dawson Falls and 108mm at Inglewood.
The Pinnacles on the Coromandel Peninsula also ended up with 174mm and the township of Whitianga apparently with 80mm.
