Went and had a look from down the road, where it looks down a hill - good view of the horizon. Couldn't see much lightning, still all to the NW at this stage

Dark CB coming over now, the back end contains the nice hail, according to the rain radar image.

We had a heap of hail here in Henderson around 6pm, followed by some very heavy rain. Thunder heard (and still going)

Re: Thunderstorms Sept 28th-30th
good hail showing up over the kaipara harbour in a narrow line on the rain radar...all set to slide down onto the city
I can here distant thunder from here
we are going to miss this line here.,....but will get the next line by the looks
I would say this blow up line is developing because of an approaching NW wind change

It's moving east very slowly, would be typical if it fizzle out by the time it got to me....

Re: Thunderstorms Sept 28th-30th
Stacks of lightning and stuff down here, picked a really good time to shoot down the road for some milk.. flogged with a downpour, a close ground strike & I swear some small hail pellets on the car.
Awesome!

I dont know what its but I am getting the sense that this Cb looks "evil"
incredibly dark and it has some slight mammatus look to it, the anvil is huge it already covering me.

Spectacular storm in Laingholm 20mins ago. Thunder, hail, torrential rain, and possibly some rotation quite nearby, though difficult to see through the rain. Best in ages out this way.

Did you really have 2-3cm (20-30mm) size hail? That's quite big.Cameo2 wrote:we had ten mins of hail 2-3cm size, sorry have pics but no cable to link up with

Continual thunder and lightning - utterly delightful
Settled wx - not much wind and rain is steady but only light.

I'm certainly no photographer but managed to snap a few pics of the changing sky as the storm passed over: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/p ... understorm

Tornado Tim, what can you see? Its just very dark to the North of here, but I cant make out a CB, unless its so huge that high cloud over us now is the anvil?

You could have seen it around 6 PM but now the anvil is covering us, you hardly make it out but a very dark sky towards the north.

Re: Thunderstorms Sept 28th-30th
The hail we had here in Henderson I'd estimate to be around 1cm - I'm sure there were some larger stones mixed in as there were some real clunks and bangs on the roofWeather Watcher wrote:Did you really have 2-3cm (20-30mm) size hail? Re: Thunderstorms Sept 28th-30th
Had some very heavy rain as well as scattered hail stones, about 1 cm Ø at around 1800 hrs.
Couple of big thunderclaps too in Titirangi.
It appears to have settled for now.

Who put the LED's on the lightning arrestor ?

Re: Thunderstorms Sept 28th-30th
About 10 minutes ago towards Drury/Papakura noticed an interesting looking lowering.. sure enough it got bigger making its way 2/3 the way down to the ground before taking a good 4 or so minutes to retract. No evidence of it touching but was pretty darn nice being lit up every 30 seconds by the lightning.
Starting to get some excellent visible ground strikes that way now, bolts galore the last few minutes.
