Reed Timmers' answer to the Discovery Channel dropping Stormchasers. He has made his own doco series on 2012 season, episode 1 is free and then its $2 to view subsequent episodes.

I see the SPC have a 30% severe thunderstorm risk for the Gulf States on Xmas Day. May end up being a squall line but a tornado outbreak not out of the question.

Sounds like a pretty devastating Tornado hit Mobile this afternoon. To note its Christmas Day in the US.

Thanks for the link. Is it unusual to have a storm like this in the middle of winter?

Typically December records the lowest number of tornadoes by month in the USA.

The 2012 tornado count in the USA could be the lowest on record (to be confirmed).

2012 was a quiet year after a very active 2011.
Harold Brooks, research meteorologist at NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Okla., said that the lack of wind shear is responsible for the lower number of tornadoes in 2012.

"That's associated, in some ways, with the drought that was over the central part of the U.S. during the summertime," Brooks said. "The jet stream went far to the north, and when we have that kind of a pattern over the central U.S., you have very hot weather at the surface. When it is that hot and dry, you don't get very many storms.
