You should record some ripper ground temps Tim. I've always wanted a ground temp.

Re: General May Weather
Wind not dying down yet.... still holding the temp.
Looking at the models ahead for early next week looks very interesting with quite a potent cold front (NE vs NW) moving across the upper North Island on Tuesday assoc with a large trough of low pressure being injected by upper level jet.
That will be very interesting if stays in the models, and would make for one heck of a WX day

Re: General May Weather
Surprised by how low the highs are in the south Tasman. Next week [METVUW] is a real doozy with a cold surge coming in from the Chatthams ?? later next week. Abundant moisture and a deep "fetch" may be interesting for Nth Canterbury and SE Nth Is. Some unusual events/patterns for sure, going to be an exiting period though cold..

Cold but beautiful anticyclonic conditions today. Was about 3 degrees when I left home at 6.45am which is quite cold for Auckland..

Just had 12mm with 5mm dia. hail from 1610 to 1640 today at Matauri Bay and a hefty CG in the last couple of minutes that bounced the electrics.
Only a light breeze with it.

What a contrast in temp to this time yesterday morning, 19.5 deg warmer with a NW that was rather gusty at times over night.

Re: General May Weather
Another fine looking day for Auckland but tomorrow looks wet. GFS not showing much precip for Auckland though.
Coromandel could get a decent soaking and a rumble due cold upper air.

Back on Internet properly to say that there was burn marks in the grass from footprints walking over yesterday's frost. Another frost this morning but that went off but remaining rather cold despite the NW looking sky.

Re: General May Weather
No frost here this morning. Was -4.2 last night at around 10pm but by 10:30 it was up to +5 as the NW came through. Woke up to a pleasant 10.3 as of 7:30am. There has certainly been some very big temperature contrasts across the region these last couple of days.

Re: General May Weather
Interesting but not interesting afternoon as it eventually got up to 12C this afternoon with the sun coming out but with that sun ,the temperature managed to maintain itself with cloud cover moving across from the NW.
Cooling down now with a few spits of rain.
Light NE.

Re: General May Weather
Seems like a band of heavy rain stalled over glenfield this morning ,drove through the narrow rain band on the way to orewa and it was still in roughly the same spot on way back 30 min later, lots of surface flooding around , Wairau creek was flowing well over it's concrete. http://youtu.be/n67cA4648gg

Re: General May Weather
Readings from my station for the month:
Ave temp 10.1°C
Ave Minimum 4.6°C
Ave Maximum 16.9°C
Minimum -4.7°C on 29th (4 air frosts + 2 days <1°C)
Maximum 25.3°C on 6th
Rainfall 11.8mm with 4.4mm on 12th, YTD 165.4mm
Warm for the first three weeks then a cold end to the month meant the average temp was only 0.5°C above the mean.
New record low temp for May for the station (also lower than any June temp) and its lowest May rainfall.

Re: General May Weather
May 2015 was a kaleidoscopic month of two halfs, with some places experiencing both exceptionaly warm and cold temperatures, along with floods, droughts, low-level snow, tornado/waterspouts, etc.
A month of numerous records or near-records...
Some very preliminary May 2015 figures for the main centres:
Records included Chch Aero's coldest daily May temp and, like Akld Aero, its 2nd warmest daily May temp.
