Nice little lightning and thunder show before that line arrived, lightning seems to have abruptly stopped as soon as the rain hit. Went as high as 222 mm/hr on my station - 3rd equal highest on record

Got a look at a bit more of Mt Herbert this afternoon after it was shrouded by low cloud, about the top 1-200m was still obscured but I couldn't see any snow below that.

That was a pretty good squall here in Grey Lynn, visibility down to about 20m along with bright lightning flashes making everything solid white. Just caught the edge of a decent area of hail that was showing up on the radar too

The line just through here. Some noisy wind gusts with it . Don't get very many of those in this inland basin. Wont be surprised if there is some tree damage.

And yet just down the road in Flat Bush my rain rate topped out at 16mm/h. 3.6mm for today.

Re: Heavy rain weekend and very cold blast 10-16th August
A PWS a few kilometers north of me on the peninsula exposed to the west reported a wind gust of 109 kmh with that storm! Not sure if accurate or not. Will try to leave 15 minutes earlier for work tomorrow for a short detour to check it out, should be obvious damage if the reading is correct. https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IAUCKLAN627

Going by media reports some pretty extensive damage in part of Auckland tonight. The somewhat ironically names The Cloud for one... Check out this story from the NZ Herald Android App

Didn't get any time to detour this morning but the local 109 kmh reading sounds very plausible based on media reports of damage in other spots.

Looks like its Severe Warned now:
Metservice wrote:Severe Thunderstorm Warning
Issued at 9:21am Monday 12 Aug 2019
This warning affects people in the following local government areas:
Stratford, New Plymouth
At 09:07 am, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near NEW PLYMOUTH and BELL BLOCK.
These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the eastsoutheast, and are expected to lie near TARATA at 09:37 am and near WHANGAMOMONA and POHOKURA SADDLE at 10:07 am.
These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by torrential rain, large hail, damaging wind gusts and possible tornadoes.
Torrential rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.
Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, and make driving conditions hazardous.
Very strong wind gusts can break branches from trees, damage roofing, and make driving hazardous especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
Tornadoes can blow out windows, lift roofs, break large branches off trees, generate dangerous flying debris and blow vehicles off the road.
The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management advises that as storms approach you should:
- Take shelter, preferably indoors away from windows;
- Avoid sheltering under trees, if outside;
- Move cars under cover or away from trees;
- Secure any loose objects around your property;
- Check that drains and gutters are clear;
- Be ready to slow down or stop, if driving.
During and after the storm, you should also:
- Beware of fallen trees and power lines;
- Avoid streams and drains as you may be swept away in flash flooding.
This warning is due to be updated or lifted by 10:07am Monday 12 Aug 2019
