Have noticed that MTD (to 22nd) Tekapo, Cromwell and Queenstown Aero all have unusually low sunshine totals, contrasting with sites further east in Otago and Canterbury. That is very unusual (assuming the 3 instruments are working properly).

The westerly pattern has been particularly active, a lot of cloud has been generated off the Mnts and there has been a lot of frontal activity. Wetter and cooler than normal as well. Central Otago is having a poor start to Summer this year.

Some very warm or even hot weather coming onto NZ at the end of the month.

Auckland looks dry out into the New Year.

Is the SAM turning positive at last? It seems to be judging from the Met Service website weather maps.

Maybe not, southerly on Friday - looking potentially quite interesting for Canterbury at the moment with -26C 500mb air - and then another on New Year's Day. Looks like things will be settled ahead of Friday but maybe with some heat showers, then after that maybe up-and-down again.

I have a feeling the SSW will help to drag frontal systems through at times until mid January, especially for the south island.
In the years of 2002-2003 i think our last SSW if im correct? We had a few decent thunderstorm days in January one being the 5th.
I agree about Friday being one to watch, although a very late change for Ashburton northwards around 11pm.
If the ingrediants are ripe enough, this is the best time to get night time storms.
The tropics are starting to kick into gear, so perhaps come mid January we may see that sub tropical switch for the north island 🏝️🤔.

Cloud clearing away this afternoon, well 'clagg' ( I think we brought it up from Geraldine) clearing away from Belmont this afternoon, becoming sunny at last. Hope it says away for our Christmas celebrations tomorrow.
Don't want any lightning in Canterbury until we return home next year. [-X

Quite a slow moving shower line just to my South East, someone will be getting some good rain. Been a warm Cristmas Eve. 28.8 on my station. Just maybe a late storm for Christmas Eve, I've seen these situations intensify as late as 8:30pm at this time of year.

Later tomorrow into early boxing day there looks to be the potential for isolated nighttime thunderstorms/heavy falls central North Island. Shortwave will moving across the area and EU/ukmet putting out the rainfall numbers.

Yeah, it died off tonight. Models have the action Matamata -Putaruru -Tokaroa tomorrow so might have a fine Christmas evening with storms nearby putting on a show if lucky.

Fridays change looks simula to the last one we had, which unfortunately wasnt the best set up! Looks like the main change races ahead of the coldest air so timing could be the issue again.
Merry Christmas to all, nothing to interesting around this part of the country over the next couple days, hasnt actually been the warmest over the past 2 weeks.

Merry Xmas!

The Long wave trough has had quite an impact on the sea surface temps over the last 7 days around NZ.

Merry Christmas everyone, I'm hoping Santa might be kind to me with forecast severe weather within chasing distance. Question is, do I have the will power to not over indulge & be able to chase this afternoon. Fingers crossed on both counts :-)

Merry Xmas all, I might chase later depending on wine consumption with lunch and how close Cbs are to Auckland.

Quite a bit of blue sky here now, 20C, dp 15C

Argh looks a flop here today. Still very thick cloud cover and a cool feel to the air. Going to need to clear very quickly for any chance here.

Merry Xmas. A cool, cloudy day in Akaroa. A shower overnight in the small hours, but nothing more.

Have had mostly sunny since 3pm, warming up a bit. Models seem to be spot on so far. Building over a line Matamata - Putaruru - Tokoroa.

Some belated sun in a dry day but too much cloud for proper sunshine earlier. Coolest Dec 25 here since 2004 (unless a significant warmup happens in the next 2 hours).
